Best known for an abundance of art, history, culture and superb food and wine; Italy has never been recognized as a great golfing nation. But my interest was considerably piqued with the emergence of the 2009 Open Championship silver medalist Matteo Manassero and World Cup-winning brothers Francesco and Eduardo Molinari. And as Tuscany is brimming with picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and breathtaking scenery, I thought I would start there. Not knowing what to expect, I was very pleasantly surprised to find tucked away in Italy's most beautiful region now one of my favourite golf courses in the world: Una Poggio Dei Medici.
The course designed by Baldovino Dassu and Alvise Rossi Fioravanti, Una Poggio Dei Medici was opened in 1995 and has hosted the Italian Ladies Open on five occasions. Set only a few minutes from Florence, the course is situated in the heart of the beautiful Mugello region and it took my breath away. From lush and immaculate fairways and well-paced greens, to stunning, hilly surroundings Una Poggio Dei Medici is exactly how a Tuscan golf course should be and is a real challenge for all standards of players. It features some difficult holes that require a good portion of skill; but with a stunning view around every corner, the effort is well rewarded.
The 18-hole, par 72 course features a total of ten holes with water hazards, but they are all fairly placed and very negotiable. Each hole has five different tee boxes, ranging from gold at the back through to red at the front and giving a sporting chance to all abilities. Golfers need to think their way around the course, as well-placed tee shots are vital for good scoring here. This is immediately apparent at the first hole, which features a blind drive. Combined with the spying eyes of a whole block of holiday apartments behind it, this had my pulse racing from the start!
Putting was a dream here and not too difficult thanks to large, well-fringed greens and a true run of the ball. I found the long, uphill third and fourth holes required some good ball striking and while the first nine holes are beautiful in design and construction; for me the second nine holes are the real delight of the course.
These holes are full of quirks and sights to keep you on your toes and entertained. For example, the 147 meter, par three, twelfth hole has a second tee position almost 100 yards left of the first; allowing the hole to play completely differently according to the green keepers wish. The monster par five, thirteenth is just a little over 550 meters from the back tee and with two blind shots, each blow really counts. But the 15th hole was my personal favourite. At 332 meters, I found it both challenging and stimulating with a split green that allows the hole to be set up in two very different ways. While it was perhaps not the most difficult hole, it demanded a well-placed drive and an accurate approach that kept me well occupied.
Standing high up on the 16th tee, I considered that this golf course is probably visually as stunning as it gets. The literal translation of Poggio Dei Medici is 'Hill of the Medici (referring to the infamous Florentine family called Medici) and at possibly the highest point of the course, nothing but the sound of birds and Florentine church bells surrounded me. For a moment, I was intoxicated with the feeling that if God himself played golf, he'd choose this place to test his game! In fact, throughout the round I was enchanted by the sight of old derelict buildings that are scattered around the course and couldn???t help but dream of owning and renovating one to while away the summer months between rounds.
By the time I had arrived at the 17th hole, I had already decided that I would be bringing my father to play this course in the very near future. Finally, the 18th was as wonderful a finishing hole as I have played in golf: a par five dogleg left and round another water trap for a final push at the end.
Indeed all holes here were a joy to play and it took me longer than anticipated to complete them, but I can only put that down to me being awestruck at my surroundings and possibly forgetting to hit the ball!
The rest
Una Poggio Dei Medici Golf and Resort is home to a fantastic 16th century clubhouse which only adds to my fondness of the course. Upon arrival, I was impressed with its spacious layout and tasteful d??cor and intrigued by the ancient golf bags hanging on one of the walls. The bar and restaurant provide a wonderful atmosphere and a menu to match, whether you???re after a quick bite or a leisurely lunch. The on-site pro shop is adequate and well-stocked and I found the staff to be extremely helpful and pleasant. Full marks all round from me!
