First Visit to Penwortham GC.
Playing off a handicap of 9 and participating in a Seniors Open (Aug 2013) I have to say I am not a fan of the layout despite playing to my handicap. I have to confess to not finding it all that easy so I am a little surprised at the other reviews which seem to suggest that Penwortham is benevolent. Maybe the course set-up is changed for competition? but on first impressions I don't think that many changes could be made as the track in my view is very one dimensional.
General conditions of the course was reasonable considering the recent dry spell, but some fairways were cut inconsistently giving you some very grassy lies. The greens are all sloping and on this particular day very different in speed you certainly need a couple of rounds to get used to the roll off's.
Having said that my judgement is coloured because I was playing in a Tournament had I been on a recreational day out I would have had no complaints.
So in conclusion Penwortham is OK; am I eager to play the track again "not really" but wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a go. I consider the course most suitable for sub 15 handicappers.
OFF COURSE - Club House Traditional, Food was very tasty and good value. Members friendly.

I am a 26 handicapper and think that this course offers many difficulties yet is also easy to play for newer golfers.

Penwotham is an excellent course. You have to be accurate off tee to have any chance of making a good score. The trees provide a challenge and so does the rough. The greens are amazing all year round.
David (Pre 2010)

Penwortham offers a decent challenge for its short length, you must be accurate off the tee to have any sort of shot into the greens due to the tree lined fairways, it plays longer in the winter months when the ground becomes much softer.
John S (Pre 2010)

Penwortham is a gem of a course it is quite a short course compared to others. But when the wind blows there is an extremely small room for error off the tee and with your approach and will be a true test of your golfing skills.
Alex (Pre 2010)
