Let's consider the Golf Course first.
Manchester Golf Club (Hopwood) is arguably the best Course in Manchester. Its reputation for being a Championship layout is not without merit although by modern standards its length at 6,500 yards is relatively short. However having played here many times I can assure prospective visitors that there is trouble enough to test Golfers of even scratch abilities. The course is a mixture of Moorland and Parkland which is not defined into two distinct segments but interspersed throughout the 18 holes making shot selection somewhat interesting as each fairway can 'run' very differently. The wind also can create difficulties as it seems that there is no prevailing direction due to the courses topography. I found that the long Par 3 (220 yards) and the 435 yard Par 4, 17th a particular nemesis.
At the time of my frequent visits I was playing off 9 handicap and found that I could be up to 2 shots better after the first 8 holes, however the following 10 holes came back to bite me, suggesting that Manchester G.C can be very deceptive. This is a great track and to score well you need to be on your game. Greens are not in my experience as good as they may be for a track of this quality, but they are flat and usually run to fast medium, which makes them acceptable in most cases. Although the course length suggests a shortish walk do not be deceived Hopwood covers a vast area, and the walk between tees is not for the squeamish.
Would not hesitate to recommend a visit.
