The Open at Hoylake Hoylake was host to the 2006 Open Championship won by Tiger Woods with an emotional two-shot victory over compatriot Chris DiMarco. Before 2006, the Open was last played at Hoylake in 1967 when Roberto de Vicenzo of Argentina won his first and only major title.
The 2014 edition (the 143rd British Open and the 12th at Hoylake) : 17th - 20th July
• Just like the 2006 Open, the 2014 Open  starts on the members 17th hole 'Royal' and finish on the 16th hole 'Dun'.
• The green on 'Royal' was redesigned in 2010 and is 40 yards long with tricky run-off areas either side.
• Since 2006, 13 bunkers have been removed leaving 82 in total.
• Five holes have new swales around the greens to punish errant shots with more varied hazards.
• On 'Road', 'Dee', 'Hilbre', 'Royal' & 'Stand', broken ground has been created in the rough to create tougher escape shots.
A hole-by-hole look at the Royal Liverpool course

I am working through all The Open Championship courses currently on the R&A rota. I played Royal Liverpool followed by Royal Lytham on two consecutive days in January 2006. The conditions were remarkably benign for mid winter being mild and calm. There was some work in progress in preparation for the Open but it barely affected playing the course and all tees and greens were in operation. I play off 14 and somehow managed to shoot 84 (with a few blind shots this was clearly with a little bit of luck for a first timer). The course itself was in excellent condition and the greens were fast and true. It feels very 'open' and flat but each individual hole has its nuances and presents a classic links challenge. If you like traditional links golf then you will not be disappointed.
