A
Ace A hole in one.
Albatros Three under par score at a hole.
Approach "Approach shot". Short or medium shot to either the pin or putting green.
Attend the flag To remove and hold flag whilst another player putts.
Away The person furthest way from the hole and the first to play.
B
Back The last nine holes of a golf course. / Tee position that makes hole the longest.
Best Ball / Better Ball Best score on a hole by partners in a best-ball match.
Birdie One under par score on a hole.
Bogey One over par score on a hole.
Break A bounce or roll to left or right. In putting, the curve due to slope in green.
C
Carry Distance a ball travels from impact to hitting the ground.
Chip Short, lofted shot from the green.
Compression Degree of resilience of a golf ball.
D
Divot Turf sometimes removed when hitting a shot.
Dogleg Left or right bend in fairway.
Draw Controlled right to left shot with a moderate curve.
Drop When ball is lost or there is an unplayable lie, golf ball is dropped from shoulder height onto course.
E
Eagle Two under par score on a hole.
F
Fore Warning call when a shot may endanger another player.
G
Gimmie Short putt clse to a hole, awarded by other players. Only used in friendly rounds.
Grain Direction blades of grass point.
Green Area of course by the hole with very short grass.
Ground under Repair If an area of the couse is under maintenance and your ball lands there, you can remove your ball without any penalty.
H
Honor Given to player scoring lowest on last hole, right to tee off first on next.
Hook Shot that goes strongly from rifght to left ( or opposite if you play left handed!).
Hosel Hollow part of clubhead where shaft is attached.

Lie Position of ball on the course. / Angle at which clubhead is set on the shaft.
Links Golfcourse on coastal terrain.
Lip Edge of the hole.
M
Marker Item used to mark position of golf ball on green to prevent your ball obstructing other player's shots. / Person who keeps score.
Match Play Competition by holes, one player defeats other by winning more holes than the other.
Medal Play "Stroke Play". Lowest number of strokes wins.
Mulligan Chance to replay last shot.
N
Niblick Scottish term for nine iron.
O
OB Short for out of bounds. Area outside the course play area.
P
Par Standard number of strokes for each hole.
Penalty Extra stroke added to player's score for violation of the rules.
Pin Flagstick.
Pin-high A ball which is even with the pin, but to one side.
Pitch Shot used to approach the green, shorter swing than normal, but longer than a chip.
Play Through When a group of slower golfers allow others to play ahead of them.
Q
Quarter Shot Greatly reduced swing in taking the shot.
R
Range Practice area (aka Driving Range).
Recovery Shot played back intoa good position from an unfavourable one.
Relief Permission to lift and drop the ball without incurring a penalty.
Rough Longer and thicker grassed area of the course.
S
Shank Shot struck by the hosel of the club which causes the ball to go dead right.
Slice Ball curves violently to the right.
T
Top To hit the ball above the centre, causing the ball to dive down and roll rather than rise.
Turn Halfway point on a golf course.

Whiff Swing and miss the ball completely. Counts as a stroke.
Y
Yips Missing short putts due to nerves.
