SHOE SHOWCASE - Top-end golf shoes tried by a playing Pro

MEET THE TESTER

Adam Taylor is a Professional golfer attempting to get his Tour card. He's a fantastic player and he practises five days a week, making him the perfect candidate for testing golf shoes. In fact, Adam practises and plays so much golf that he goes through a new pair of shoes every three months! Lucky for him then that we gave him not one, but four fantastic top-of-the-range shoes to try out for the last three months, so he's been able to alternate between shoes on a daily basis, here's how he got on...

Callaway Golf RAZR
Contact:
www.callawaygolf.com/footwear
Sizes: 7-14

They say: The RAZR has a full grain waterproof leather saddle upper which is soft, lightweight and supple for unmatched performance, style and durability in every type of playing condition. They feature a special 'Ortholite X40 moulded insert' - an industry leading foam insole that combines the benefit of strength, breathability, and moisture transport and antibacterial function. DrySport moisture management and RainSport waterproof technologies provide the ultimate in comfort and dryness (moisture wicking linings and breathable waterproof systems). The shoes also feature Callaway Golf's patented comfort tech gel tongue, featuring injection moulded gel tubes to disperse lace pressure uniformly across the entire surface of the tongue, for better circulation and maximum comfort. Plus the outlast of the shoe has a clever temperature management system.

Adam says: "I'd never worn a pair of Callaway Golf shoes before I put the RAZR on, it's not a brand I'd normally associate with shoes, but I was pleasantly surprised at the style and performance. At first the shoes felt a little bit heavier than others I've worn before (and am trying in this test) but during the course of a round of golf that feel wasn't as noticeable. There's an incredible amount of padding to these shoes, which makes your foot feel really supported throughout the swing, giving great stability. It also made them soft and comfortable to wear, right from day one, not a blister in sight! Look-wise I really like the RAZR, it is quite classical in style and goes with any outfit. The brown suede detail finish looks expensive and has worn very well (it doesn't look scruffy after just a few games). I also like the square shape to the front of the shoe, and found that this encourages a good full followthrough with great balance. Overall I'd give the RAZR a 7 out of 10 for comfort but a 9 out of 10 for style and performance."

Adidas Tour 360 ATV
Contact:
www.adidasgolf.com
Sizes: 7-15

They say: The TOUR360 ATV (All-Terrain Versatility) is Adidas's most technologically advanced shoe to date. Engineered with a revolutionary construction to give golfers the ability to attack every shot, no matter how challenging their position, Tour360ATV utilises innovative forefoot flexibility and zonal traction elements to deliver maximum grip, comfort and stability throughout the swing. The ATV's multiple flex points inn the forefoot allow the foot to move and flex in the way it was inherently meant to, and adapt to any surface.

The TOUR360 ATV has a dual-density outsole with 10-spike configuration to help golfers maintain stability and sure-footedness in wet or uneven conditions. Its revolutionary construction connects a 5-pod decoupled heel for adaptability, a strengthened TPU midfoot for support and aggressive TRAXION secondary lugs in the ultra-flexible forefoot for enhanced grip and feel. The result is dependable, All Terrain Versatility in any number of challenging conditions including long or short rough, in soft or hard sand and even taking on steep uphill or downhill lies. A premium, full-grain leather upper with 360WRAP promotes maximum stability and support around the midfoot while inside a FITFOAM moulded insole provides everlasting cushioning and comfort heel-to-toe. The footwear uses THINTECH technology with PINS, an advanced cleat system and thinner outsole to bring the foot closer to the ground for improved stability, power transfer and balance.

Adam says: Adidas are very clever with their branding, the strips down the sides of the shoes are very distinctive so you instantly know what you are wearing and I associate these with top Tour professionals. I personally don't like the style; it's quite funky and modern and goes with the bright coloured outfits well. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to picking out a pair of shoes, the simpler, and more classical the style the better. Now for the plus points, the comfort and support is incredible. My foot really felt totally supported by these shoes, the support for the arch is excellent. As a result I had great swing stability and really felt balanced wearing these shoes. I'd definitely give them a 9 out of 10 for the comfort, they are just slightly heavier than others I have worn otherwise they would have scored top marks. There's a plastic protector at the toe end of the shoe, which is hardly noticeable, but it does a great job of preventing scuffing and wear when you followthrough. I've not seen this done before on a pair of shoes but it makes a lot of sense. Even after 10 rounds of golf my shoes still looked perfect. For all-round shoe performance you really can't go wrong with the TOUR360 ATV it's fantastic.

Nike Lunar Control
Contact : www.nikegolf.com
Sizes: 7-15

They say: Developed with insight from Nike Golf athlete Paul Casey, the Nike Lunar Control men's Golf Shoe delivers the optimal combination of stability and comfort in the lightest-weight performance shoe on Tour. The saddle panel of the Nike Lunar Control features Flywire for lightweight support and structure right where golfers need it. Flywire is made up of ultra-thin, ultra strong nylon fibres that wrap the midfoot to hold it in place during activity, eliminating slippage without adding weight.

Incredibly lightweight, responsive cushioning in the heel of the shoe gives it a low-to-the ground feel for comfort from the first hole to the last.
The Lunar Control features the Nike Power Platform outsole for stability and balance. It helps keep the foot firmly planted, evenly distributing weight for more power and a smooth transfer from backswing to followthorugh. This next-generation version features a secondary Power Channel in the forefoot for greater flexibility and natural motion. The shoes have Scorpion stinger Spikes with the Tri-Lock system for extra traction and a two-year waterproof guarantee.

Adam says: From the moment I first slipped my foot into the Nike Lunar Control shoe I was instantly a fan. It is by far the most comfortable golf shoe I have ever worn. It's so lightweight to wear you almost feel as though you've got no shoe on at all, lighter than an expensive pair of trainers - without contest a 10 out of 10 marks for comfort. And yet that feel doesn't come at the compromise of stability or support. It's really very supportive and the padded material inside the shoe and particularly around the heel, gives a great feel of stability when you swing. I've never bought a Nike golf shoe before but after wearing this one I definitely will. I don't personally like the look of the shoe, it's very sport and modern and black only really goes with dark trousers, but I simply cannot fault it for comfort and performance. Top marks from me.

FootJoy Sport
Price: £120
Sizes: 6-12
Contact: www.footjoy.co.uk

They say: The FootJoy Sport shoe has a new white smooth Full Grain Leather upper that offers outstanding waterproof comfort, breathability and durability. It features a clever new high-abrasion toe guard with black and silver detail. An external heel stabiliser provides great support. An Athletic Mesh Lining gives comfort and additional breathability. A soft, lightweight moulded EVA Fit-Bed increases underfoot cushioning, support and aesthetic appeal to add to the contemporary styling of the shoe. The FJ Sport has a Laser Last full rounded toe character, standard fit across the forefoot and instep with a slightly narrower heel. The Laser Last is a composite of thousands of digital scans of the FootJoy Laser Fitting system. A Moulded TPU Outsole with Forefoot FlexZone provides outstanding stability and flexibility. The unique BOA Closure system allows for exceptional fit and is easily altered during the round. The FootJoy Sport is fitted with STINGER cleats by CHAMP, which gives green-friendly traction and has a fast-twist system that makes them simple to change. The FJ sport comes with a 1-year waterproof guarantee and has a Proofguard Waterproof Membrane to provide total waterproof protection.

Adam says: To be honest with you this review is a little biased as I've always been a FootJoy shoe wearer and it wasn't really until this test that I tried any other shoe. The brand is just synonymous with great performance and my FJ shoes have never let me down. So it is no surprise that I found the FJ Sport as reliable as ever. I wouldn't normally pick a sport style but the FootJoy Sport has a simple yet sophisticated look that will go with pretty much any outfit you'll wear on the course. It is also fairly traditional with a subtle modern twist to it, which I love. I'm not keen on the plastic plate around the toe but it does the job of protecting it from scuffing brilliantly as even after two weeks of solid golf there wasn't a mark! The shoe fits perfectly, like a glove, and I absolutely love the BOA lace system, it's very clever and works brilliantly. It's so simple to use and your foot just feels totally enveloped by the shoe with the perfect fit and amount of pressure. Gone are the days of those fiddly laces and having to get the spread of the fit just right, now with the BOA system the spread is so even there are no harsh pressure points across the foot. A new shoe straight out of the box normally needs a bit of breaking in but it's not the case with the FJ Sport, the leather is supple and soft and after my first round I loved the feel and comfort. A top mark of 10 out of 10 and absolutely nothing to fault - you can't beat this shoe!
