Bjorn is last man standing at Johnnie Walker
August 30, 2011

Callaway GolfCallaway Staff Player Thomas Bjorn claimed his second victory of an outstanding season on Sunday, winning a nerve-wracking five-man play-off at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

The Dane performed superbly in the play-off, making birdie on the difficult 18th hole three times in succession to eventually triumph at the fifth extra hole. The winning blow was a majestic 147-yard 7-iron to three feet that effectively sealed the victory.

“The way I played the last three playoff holes, I can't be more proud of what I did,” said a delighted Bjorn afterwards. ”Everything was pretty spot on and those wedges I hit in on play-off holes three and four were special. But that 7-iron on the fifth play-off hole was probably one of the best shots I've ever hit.”

The Dane carded rounds of 68-69-71-69 to finish at 11-under-par in testing conditions at the 2014 Ryder Cup venue. In the ensuing play-off, the 40-year-old started with two pars before reeling off three straight birdies at the 533-yard 18th hole.

Bjorn’s stats for the week make impressive reading; he ranked 13th in Driving Distance and 22nd in Driving Accuracy with his RAZR Hawk driver, and also hit a creditable 75% of Greens in Regulation (ranked 15th). He was also excellent on the greens with his Odyssey putter, ranking 8th in Putts per GIR and 11th in Putts per Round.

The win was the 12th European Tour title of his illustrious career, and the 18th worldwide professional win. It takes him into the Top 10 on the Race to Dubai and to just outside the world top 50. This is also the first time Bjorn has won more than once in a single season since 1998, having already claimed the Qatar Masters in February.
