Played 1, Won 1. 'DJ' wins with TayorMade R1 on first outing

January 10, 2013

Dustin Johnson claimed a convincing 4-shot victory in the season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions, playing the new TaylorMade R1 driver and RocketBladez Tour irons for the first time.

After three days of false starts due to high winds topping 40mph, the TaylorMade Tour Staff professional overpowered the Kapalua Plantation Course and cruised to his seventh career win on the PGA Tour, making him the leading winner on Tour among players in their 20's.

One of the longest hitters on Tour, Johnson used his power relentlessly to attack the shorter par-4s and 5s with the new R1, a driver that features a visually striking crown graphic and which is TaylorMade's most adjustable driver ever. To optimize his launch in Maui, DJ's 10.0° lofted driver included a neutral face angle with an 8-gram shot shape weight in the toe and a 2-gram in the heel and averaged 275.9 yards off the tee despite often brutal headwinds, and recorded a 405-yard drive during the final round, which was the longest in the field on Tuesday.

Commenting on his win, Johnson said, "This course I really enjoy playing. It's a lot of fun. You can hit driver on every hole. The par 5s are reachable. You've got a few holes that you can drive it up there close to the green and then there's a few holes that are just really hard."

Also in DJ's bag were TaylorMade's new RocketBladez Tour irons, the first distance-oriented iron to be played on Tour. RocketBladez irons feature a "Speed Pocket" to promote faster ball speed and a higher launch angle for longer, high-flying, quick-stopping shots. One of the tournament's most memorable shots was DJ's 243-yard approach on the 18th hole on Sunday with a RocketBladez Tour 5-iron to six feet.

The victory extends DJ's streak of years with at least one PGA Tour victory to six. It was also the third time he has won a weather-shortened, 54-hole event, adding the 2013 Tournament of Champions to the 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach and 2011 Barclays, the last three events to be so affected on Tour.
