Wilson creates Shockwaves with ultra-light driver
February 4, 2010

The Wilson Staff Shockwave Driver

Wilson Golf has unveiled the ultra-lightweight Wilson Staff Shockwave, its lightest-ever high performance driver, promising higher swing speeds to deliver more power and distance.

10% lighter than standard drivers on the market, the Shockwave is designed to a simple formula – a lighter club promotes greater swing speed and greater swing speed produces more distance.

Weighing in at a mere 265 grammes, the Shockwave is a full 25g lighter than the award-winning Wilson Staff Smooth driver used by three-time major winner Padraig Harrington.

During the design process, every gramme of weight in the club was reevaluated to generate optimal weight savings in the Shockwave. The thickness of the clubhead walls were all reduced to decrease weight; a low-density compound produced a grip that is 8g lighter than standard grips. The biggest savings, however, came from the ultra-light 50g shaft series by UST Mamiya - even non-essential paint and decals were eliminated to further reduce the club weight by 2 grammes.

1. Variable Face Thickness
Proprietary VFT design delivers a sweet spot twice as wide as a constant thickness face.

2. Tungsten Weight Screw
Weight is pulled deep into the head with a 5g tungsten weight screw designed to promote a higher ball flight while maintaining a high MOI for a more stable head.

3. AXIVCore Super-Lite Shaft
The major weight reduction came from the 50g UST Mamiya AXIVCore Super-Lite Shaft, where precious grammes were even saved by eliminating decals and non-essential paint.

Taking advantage of all those weght savings, it became possible to add a 5g tungsten screw, designed to pull weight deeper into the head and promote a higher ball flight while maintaining a high MOI for greater stability at impact. The Shockwave driver also employs a similar proprietary VFT (variable face thickness) insert as the award-winning Wilson Staff Smooth, to deliver higher ball speed over a wider area of the clubface.

“The result is that the ultra-lightweight Shockwave punches well above its weight and delivers a heavyweight performance time and again,” said Doug Wright, Business Director of Wilson in Europe.
