GREAT GIFTS FOR GOLFERS

SEEN AT THE LONDON GOLF SHOW

The London Golf Show 2008The 2008 London Golf Show - its fourth edition - was opened today by Ryder Cup star and world no. 20 Lee Westwood at ExCel in London's Docklands.

The first of three show days saw a large crowd enjoying the ever-popular features: the driving range with all the latest equipment to test, the superb golf simulators, whose realism reaches new heights every year, the tantalising holiday destinations and properties, and of course the latest in golf fashion - including the first appearance of Ian Poulter Design.

There are also the trickshots, the iconic floating green (where Lee Westwood hit his first in the water, so there's hope for us all...), putting and chipping contests, and the usual array of gagdets and gizmos.

For those with a serious intent to improve, there's expert tuition in every area of the game. We were particularly impressed by the patient and very effective members of the European Golf Teachers Federation in the nets and at the chipping green.

The huge American Golf retail outlet, with bargains on every kind of equipment, has relocated to the centre of the hall, but there are also special show offers available all over the hall, plus endless competitions and draws offering all manner of prizes, including a Land Rover at the "Hole in One" simulator, a holiday to TPC Sawgrass at the Floating Green, and superb Yonex drivers in the Long Driving competition.

The show is open from 10am - 5pm on Saturday and from 10am - 4pm on Sunday, and there's more than enough on show to fill your day, so get to ExCel early and avoid the queues at the very popular competition and simulator stands. Tickets cost £10 for a single, or £15 for two - money you'll easily make up on the bargains you'll find.

With so much on show it's hard to take it all in, but here are a few that caught our eye on Friday.

The Slip Saver slip-on spikes

Slip Saver

If you've ever wished you could play in your favourite trainers or loafers, but can't get enough grip for a full swing, here's your answer. Slip-on spikes that adjust to your shoe size, take up no room in a bag and take soft or metal spikes. Special show price of £15 on Laserstyle's stand S-30.

RedGolf.net golf holidays

RedGolf.net (stand H-81)

Everyone's ideal golf holiday is different and PGA pro Toby Marsden understands this. His amazingly detailed - yet simple to use - website allows you to create exactly the holiday you want to a multitude of destinations and, when you're finished, gives you an immediate, guaranteed quote online.

The Paul Hurrion range of GEL putters

The Paul Hurrion Signature range of GEL putters

We've written elsewhere about the exceptional GEL putters, designed by Dr Paul Hurrion, putting coach to Open Champion Padraig Harrington, and now he has released his own signature range, with even greater feel and topspin roll. Try them out at the Putting Green (K-59) - special prices on offer too!

Eagleye Rentals for properties right on the golf course or resort

Eagleye Rentals

If you're renting a golf holiday property, especially abroad, you don't want to be driving round unknown roads looking for the course you want to play. Sue Foyle's Eageleye handles only villas and resorts around the world that are right on the golf course. Have a chat with her at stand F-28.

Cutters performance golf gloves

Cutters performance gloves

A solid grip is vital for golf, but also for American football, and now the exclusive C-Tack performance grip material first used on the gridiron has been incorporated into a golf glove. More grip means less grip pressure and muscle tension is needed, creating more cluhead speed. Try them on A-60.

Teeleaf golfwear packages for corporate or personal gifts

Teeleaf Golfwear

Organising a society or corporate golf day - or perhaps just looking for a very personal gift for someone special? Teeleaf make up packages of customised embroidered or printed golf wear to suit every budget, and with no mimimum order quantity. Prices start at just £29.99. Stand S-7.

Jamgolf.com for genuine golf equipment auctions online

We'll be reviewing more products every day of the Show: Day Two - Day Three.
