GADGETS & GIZMOS
The Bodycare Salt Heater
This product has to be seen to be believed. A plastic pouch full
of green-blue jelly. Sitting in the goo is a small metal disk. Press
on this and the whole pack begins to crystallise and generate up
to 54°C of heat in just a few seconds.
This is apparently known as an exothermic reaction taking place
in a non-toxic solution of sodium acetate.
The heat generated will last anywhere from 30 minutes up to 3 hours,
depending on conditions, and can be used to relieve aches and pains
on the golf course or at home, or simply to warm the hands on a
cold day. It is very soothing, steady heat, and the pack can be
moulded onto the affected area to maximise comfort and relief.
What is even more remarkable is that the process is reversible
hundreds of times. Simply boil the bag in a saucepan of water until
all the crystals have completely melted and the product can be carried
around and used again. (Click here to see the
instructions for use.)
The Salt Heater is available in a range of shapes and sizes to
suit different uses. Pictured above left is the small hand-warming
pack which can be carried in the pocket. There is a larger heater
for the lower back, stomach cramps and hips, a neck heater (below)
to wrap around the neck and shoulders, and a pack for the wrists,
elbows and ankles. The makers also sell a ceramic stone belt to
hold the large heater pack and maximise the heat output, which has
a velcro strap to allow the pack to be worn while moving around.
The packs are recommended for the relief of pain associated with
arthritis, neuralgia, rheumatism, lumbago and migraine, but also
for cramps, muscular aches, tennis elbow, sprains and stress relief.
Packs can be customised in shape, size and colour for corporate
promotional purposes. Full details are on the company
website.
Starting at only £10 by e-mail order for the handwarmer,
the Salt Heater products are a very practical, transportable solution
for aches and pains as well as an excellent gift for aficionados
of bad weather golf.
