Mickelson to rework Torrey Pines North Course

January 28, 2013

San Diego resident Phil Mickelson gets excited talking about the changes he envisions when he reworks the North Course at Torrey Pines. Mickelson has donated his services to oversee a redesign that is expected to be completed in 2015.

Mickelson said his design philosophy centers on making the course playable for average golfers, particularly at Torrey Pines, a municipally owned facility. He said will focus on creating open approaches into greens, allowing players to bounce the ball onto putting surfaces, reducing or eliminating forced carries.

He also plans to pull out a substantial amount of grass on the perimeter of some holes, bringing an adjacent canyon more into play, citing lower maintenance and water costs as an additional benefit.

“When I go out there and play, I already see in my mind what it’s going to be, and I’m just anxious to get it there because I see where it’s at today, and where it’s going to be, and it’s going to be spectacular and something we’re all very proud of because not only will it be playable and fun, but it’s going to be visually so much more stimulating and exciting,” Mickelson said.
