Back In Black

Black has been a big color in golf in recent years, and the new ProType putters from Odyssey are riding that fashion wave with their latest line of premium putters. Start with the clubheads, which are made of 1025 carbon steel and boast a midnight black PVD finish. The steel shafts have what company officials call a “black powder coat” and the seamless grips come in that same hue.

Visually, Odyssey technicians aver that the ProType Black putters have a distinctive, stealthy look. But they are quick to add that they devoted as much of their energies toward function with these products as form. The milled putter heads, which come in three shapes, are designed to provide the ultimate in feel and sound, they say, and the face of each has a deep, sharp milling pattern made to increase interaction with the ball, for a truer roll and increased consistency.

“These may be the coolest, most premium designs we’ve ever developed,” says Austie Rollinson, Odyssey’s principal designer. “The ProType Black line is born from feedback given by the world’s best players, which yielded features such as thinner top lines and thicker faces. And the forged-milled 1025 carbon steel offers a uniquely soft feel as well as crisp feedback.”

Available mid-October, the ProType Black line includes three models, No. 2, No. 9 and the 2-Ball.
