Faldo Series Celebrates Five Years Of Growth In Kunming

The Faldo Series Kunming Championship will celebrate its fifth edition at the Nick Faldo designed Lakeview Golf Club on February 7-8, 2012. The tournament has seen a significant increase in young golfers benefitting from the initiative since it first came to Yunnan Province in southwest China five years ago.

A field of more than 80 golfers competed in the 2011 Kunming Championship, an increase in participants of over 100 per cent since the inaugural event in 2007. Close to 100 entries are expected for 2012 and four players will once again qualify for the sixth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at Mission Hills Golf Club in China on March 14-16, 2012.

The field for the Kunming event, which is also open to non-nationals, will be divided into four age categories, two for boys and two for girls (Under-21 and Under-16). The winners of each division over 36 holes at the award-wining Lakeview will qualify for the Grand Final in Shenzhen, a World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

In a bid to further boost golf development in the area, competitors will also attend a workshop on the rules of golf while an audience of younger children from the local community will attend the event for free golf instruction.

The 2011/2012 Faldo Series Asia schedule features 17 tournaments in 13 different countries including five in mainland China plus others in The Philippines, Vietnam, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, Thailand and Indonesia. Kunming is the last stop before the 54-hole Grand Final at Mission Hills in March.

The Faldo Series Asia is supported by major partners ISPS, Mission Hills and The R&A, official golf wear partner UFL and official suppliers TaylorMade and Tricor. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation (APGC).

Established in 1996 by the six-time Major winner, 37 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 27 countries worldwide with more than 5,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
