Faldo Series Greece Receives R&A Boost

Grass-roots golf in Greece was given a boost recently when golf clubs were donated by The R&A to the Glyfada Golf Club of Athens (GGCA). The equipment will benefit more than 60 children who currently participate in the GGCA’s academy programme and many of whom participate in the annual Faldo Series Greece Championship.

“This generous donation of golf equipment makes a huge difference to our academy programme,” said Spyros Rokadakis, General Secretary of the GGCA. “The support of organisations like The R&A and the Faldo Series enables us to introduce many more young people to the game.”

“We send equipment like this all over the world,” added Alison White, Assistant Director of Development at The R&A. “We are pleased to know it is being used by enthusiastic newcomers to golf, including those in the Glyfada Golf Club of Athens academy programme.”

Sir Nick Faldo’s coach, Keith Wood has worked with the GGCA junior golfers and their coaches during the 2010 and 2011 Faldo Series Greece Championships. The previous two events also attracted competitors from Cyprus, Malta, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, USA, Israel, Lebanon, Italy and Sweden.

Supported by The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, the third Greece Championship will return to Costa Navarino Resort in Messinia on June 26-27, part of a record Faldo Series Europe schedule for 2012 that features 20 tournaments in 14 countries.

Established in Europe in 1996 and in Asia in 2006, 37 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 27 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
