Gate American Junior Final Results With 150 people following in the fairway and then circling each green, the World Junior Golf Ranking's number one and number two player battled stroke for stroke for three sudden death playoff holes, ending with a 7-foot birdie putt by Cody Proveaux to win the Gate American Junior Boys title. On the 570 yard par five third hole, Adrian Meronk stuck a wedge to 15 feet right of the back pin. Proveaux put his wedge from 75 yards to 7 feet. Meronk was two revolutions short of draining the birdie, setting the stage for Proveaux to drop his 7th birdie on this, his 21st hole of the day. And drain it he did -- to win the 2011 Gate American Junior
With a one-under 71 on the final day, Austria's Marina Stuetz held off Denmark's Nicole Broch Larsen, who also shot a one-under 71, to win the Gate American Junior girls title. Stuetz moved into second in the World Junior Golf Ranking. Proveaux, with his remarkable five shot comeback and playoff win over Poland's Adrian Meronk, helped him close out the year as the number on player in the World Junior Golf Ranking. The sun was setting behind the green as the crowd of players, volunteers, parents, coaches and spectators gathered to celebrate the victory not only of the winners, but of a tournament well played and a good time had by all. At the Levy Jewelers Awards Ceremony immediately following the tournament, crystal vases were awarded to the winning male and female, and sterling plates were bestowed to the four male and female runners up. Herb Peyton, CEO of Gate Petroleum, the event's title sponsor, and Lowell Kronowitz, President of Levy Jewelers, the Official Jeweler of the tournament, presented each trophy outside on the back porch of the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. The Gate American Junior featured 72 of the top junior players in the world from 18 countries. The tournament will return to the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club December 20-22, 2012. With many of the world's top ranked juniors are playing, including the top three boys, and the competition will certainly be intense, as important to the WJGS, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, is its charitable mission: Changing the World Through Junior Golf. The WJGS is dedicated to creating a competitive international arena for talented junior golfers through a series of international competitive golf events. The WJGS goal is to promote not only continuous development of talented athletes, but also citizenship, scholarship, benevolence, competitive spirit and outstanding ethical conduct. Unique to WJGS events is off-course programming that focuses on business, leadership, professional or cultural education for the players. The WJGS is also responsible for the World Junior Golf Ranking system. Established in July of this year, the World Junior Golf Ranking is the only ranking system known to coordinate all of the world's significant events to help establish a unified portrayal of global performance. The overall mission of the World Junior Golf Ranking is to improve the quality of how all junior golf events are run. Ponte Vedra Beach hosted the event in 2010 at TPC Sawgrass and in 2009 at the Inn & Club. This year's event represents a bigger, stronger field and a more critical event. The World Junior Golf Series is quickly becoming recognized as a key worldwide junior tour. During the Gate American Junior, a WJGS event, boys and girls born in 1992 or later will be competing for 54 holes of championship golf on an historic course. The tour hosts three other events, including tournaments in South Africa, Germany and Poland.
