Charley's awesome Major performance gives credibility to her Curtis Cup selection!

I'm pleased to see that talented youngster Charley Hull put in an amazing performance in the first women's Major Championship of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, played over the weekend.

16-year-old Charley finished 38th at one over-par after a very professional display of golf. The high finish gives great justification to her selection in the Curtis Cup team, which takes place at Nairn, Scotland this June 8-10.

The Kettering teenager had originally been left out of the line-up chosen by the LGU as she chose not to attend the Team Trials in favour of playing in the Kraft Nabisco Championship. They overturned that decision last week when she was announced as part of the team.

"I'm overwhelmed - I'm so happy, and it should be great," said Charley to reporters over the weekend. "I didn't think they were going to change their decision for me, but I'm glad they did. I was upset, obviously, but now I'm really happy that I'm back in the team."

As far as I'm concerned Charley did the right thing playing in the Kraft Nabisco Championship and she's proven her doubters wrong by putting in such a fantastic performance. I was fortunate to play a round of golf with Charley back when she was 10 years old and even then she was hitting the ball further than me! No surprises then that she has matured into a wonderful golfer and is now the highest ranked European Amateur golfer in the world!

The full team for the biennial match against the USA at Nairn, Scotland, from June 8-10, is listed below. GB&I have not won the Curtis Cup since they took on the Americans at Killarney in 1996 - so good luck girls!

2012 Solheim Cup Captain is announced...

Whilst I was enjoying the sunshine and fine courses in Cannes last week some major news was breaking on the other side of the pond - the 2013 Solheim Cup European Captain was announced as Liselotte Neumann!

The Swede will captain the European Team on US soil at the Colorado Golf Club next August 13-18 2013. She has a long history of Solheim Cup appearances having represented Europe on six consecutive occasions as a player, from 1990 to 2000, and will be hoping to help the European Team defend their title, possibly a tough ask considering that they have never had a victory on US soil!

" I am extremely happy and honoured to have been selected as the European Solheim Cup Captain in 2013," said Neumann. "This event has always been very special for women's golf and it brings back wonderful memories of my years on the team.  I want to thank the selection committee and the players for placing their trust in me and I look forward to the challenge of defending the title on US soil next year."

The 45-year-old hopes to benefit from her considerable experiences, which include serving as captain of the 2011 European PING Junior Solheim Cup team in Ireland. Not to mention her own personal career successes - 27 worldwide victories in a career spanning 24-years including the 1988 US Women's Open and the 1994 Women's British Open Major titles.

The Ladies European Tour's Executive Director Alexandra Armas also expressed her delight at Neumann's appointment, saying: "On behalf of the LET I would like to say how thrilled we all are to see Lotta as the European Solheim Cup team captain. As one of the most iconic figures in the history of European women's professional golf, she is a natural fit to lead the team as they seek their first away victory in 2013."

The U.S. Team leads 8-4 through 12 editions of The Solheim Cup and has never lost on home soil. However, after a thrilling, late Sunday afternoon surge last September in Ireland, the Europeans have the momentum and will be full of confidence as they head to Colorado next year. Watch this space!

Fancy meeting golf superstar Lee Westwood?

If you are a big fan of World Number 3 Lee Westwood and want to splash out on a special opportunity to meet him you can!

Westwood and his famous 'super-agent' Chubby Chandler will be hosting a spectacular evening at London's uber-trendy May Fair Hotel on April 26.
Teeing off with drinks and canapés, the action then moves into the Theatre for an hour's Q&A session. Both Westwood and Chandler are known for plain speaking and a lively atmosphere is guaranteed.

Westwood was the first golfer to break Tiger Woods' stranglehold on the World No 1 ranking while Chandler managed the early years of Rory McIlroy's career among a host of other major stars on both the men's and women's tours.

Next up is a Masterclass from Lee Westwood. This offers a unique opportunity to get inside the head and learn the techniques of one of the most consistent performers in world golf.

Lee will play his top ten favourite holes worldwide on a simulator in the May Fair's famous Crystal Room. Again, there will be a Q&A element. For any amateur wanting to know how a master-golfer manages his swing, cuts or fades and exercises course management this is once in a lifetime chance!

Sponsors include Ping who will offer a prize of a set of customised clubs plus a visit to the Ping UK Headquarters, Porsche, whose prize is a day in one of their latest models at their Silverstone Driving Experience and Virgin Atlantic.

Tickets are £225+VAT and an all in package of Double Room, breakfast and all the golf activities is just £749. To book call 0208 123 5028 or email mark@theworldstage.co.uk .

FASHION FOR THE FAIRWAYS
Mel Reid gets a stylish new wardrobe

English superstar Melissa Reid will be sporting a brand new wardrobe on the Ladies European Tour this season as the ladies Tour ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger.

The 24 year old, who finished second on the Ladies European Tour last year, will represent the brand by wearing select pieces from the women's golf collection. She joins Keegan Bradley, the 2011 PGA Championship winner and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, as an ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger Golf.

"I'm very excited to be wearing Tommy Hilfiger Golf on the Tour this year," commented Mel. "I've always loved the Tommy Hilfiger style and to be able to wear the clothing on the course will be great.

They have a really wide selection of colours and styles that will work well for me both on and off the course." Mark Fletcher, President of Fletcher Leisure Group, the global licensee for the men's and women's

Tommy Hilfiger golf lines, said "We are honoured to have Melissa join the team. In just a few years, she has risen through the ranks and is widely recognised as one of the best emerging talents in the ladies' game. Melissa has an excellent attitude and works very hard to achieve her goals. I have no doubt she will make us very proud."

The Spring 2012 Tommy Hilfiger Golf collection is inspired by a preppy and energetic spirit that is at the core of the Tommy Hilfiger brand DNA. Adding a twist to signature classic American sensibility, the collection's technical performance fabrics focus on style and fit. The versatile women's collection includes approximately 75 styles with expected retail prices ranging from £50 for bermudas and polos to £115 for knits and outerwear. Golf shoes with heels! You've got to be kidding me!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the funky new pair of ladies 'high heel' golf shoes that Puma Golf has just introduced.

The Puma Cell Fusion High Heel will certainly add some height to your posture at address but as for whether they're stable to swing in? I doubt it!

Nevertheless outlandish ladies Cobra-Puma Golf staff player Lexi Thompson plans to step out onto the fairways wearing the dazzling high heels on the LPGA Tour later this season.

"I can't wait to get into these," said the 17-year-old American sensation. "They look so great. I tried them on the range recently and they provide far more stability than you'd expect by looking at them."

The Puma Cell Fusion High Heel features a low cut vamp, microfibre synthetic leather uppers, peep toe styling and a covered platform sole with forefoot flex grooves and replaceable Smart Quill spikes. The uppers also have a combination of waterproof leather and patent leather for a one year waterproof guarantee.

"We are excited to have unveiled the first ever ladies golf shoe with a heel," said Puma Golf's president Bob Philion. "They will not only inspire our lady golfers with confidence but will offer them extreme traction from all lies around the course."

The Cell Fusion High Heels cost £149 and are available in a variety of sizes. Visit www.puma.com for more information.
