A change for the better

I was pleased to see that one of the rules changes that the R&A's Championship Committee has introduced for this 2014 golfing season is to allow the use of distance measuring devices in all R&A amateur events.

What a sensible decision, if you ask me. I have long believed that using distance measuring devices like rangefinders and GPS systems really does help speed up play. So it is annoying that other championships, like our ladies inter-counties matchweek still do not allow us to use the devices.

OK, so I do agree that they are a big help, but only with giving you an accurate yardage. I am among the many golfers who will surely remember pacing it out from the 150 yard marker post religiously on every hole before DMDs were invented. We still gave ourselves the upper hand back then, it just slowed down play, especially when searching for the 150 yard post or a yardage from a landmark on a course planner like a tree!

So I'm petitioning for the EWGA to follow the R&A's lead and follow suit by encouraging all ladies amateur events to allow the use of DMDs.

USA victory for England's Annabel Dimmock

England international Annabel Dimmock has scored the biggest win of her career with a one-hole victory in the final of the Jones Doherty Cup, the final individual event on the 2014 Orange Blossom Tour in Florida.

The 17-year-old from Wentworth is the second English player to win this prestigious matchplay event in the last three years, following in the footsteps of Charley Hull, who took the title in 2011.

Annabel, who was seeded fifth, romped through the championship at the Coral Ridge County Club, winning her first three matches by wide margins - 6/4, 5/3, 6/4 - and defeating the top seed in the semi-finals.

The final proved more testing and went the full 18 holes before she defeated the third seed, Isabella DiLiso from Florida, by one hole. Annabel was down after the first two holes, but she was soon back on level terms and for the rest of the tight match she mostly held the advantage. "I just grinded it out," she said.

Annabel's win puts the seal on a very successful performance on the Orange Blossom Tour. Last week she was runner-up in the SALLY, the South Atlantic women's amateur championship on the Orange Blossom Tour in Florida. In the previous week's tournament, the Harder Hall Invitational, she finished 14th.

Her success will propel her up the world rankings and boost her hopes of Curtis Cup selection. The top four in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) will gain automatic selection to the team, as will the top two in the LGU Order of Merit who have not qualified through the WAGR.

Annabel made her debut for the England ladies' team in last year's Home Internationals and was also in England's winning team at the Girls' Home Internationals. She was runner-up in the English girls' championship and reached final qualifying for the 2013 women's British Open.

The golf course offering a 'pay as you go' membership

With the current economic climate still unstable and the weather conditions in the UK so poor this winter it is no surprise golf courses have seen a drop off in membership numbers this January.

So it is pleasing to see a club that is doing something to encourage new members. Oak Park Golf Course has just introduced a new golf membership product called FreedomPlay. This scheme is a usage based membership, where you simply pay an annual fee to join the club and then purchase credits to cover the amount of golf you plan to play.

The membership goes live this week and as an extra special launch offer Oak Park are offering the first 100 joiners 800 credits FREE. There are limited spaces available, so simply quote FP1 when contacting Oak Park on 01252 850850 ext 2. Visit for more information.

Callaway launches their softest ball ever

Callaway Golf has just launched a new golf ball that's ideal for lady golfers as it is designed to help golfers with slower swing speeds put more yards on their shots.

Featuring the lowest compression of any ball on the market and delivering supreme distance and super-straight performance, the new Supersoft Golf Ball's ultra low (38) compression, which promotes low spin to combat hooks and slices, combines with Callaway's trademark HEX aerodynamics, resulting in straighter, more stable and super-long ball flights, with no extra effort!

A perfect product for the golfer that struggles for tee shot distance, but still seeks a soft feel on greenside chips and off the putter face, the Supersoft's two-piece composition includes a Trionomer Blend cover, specifically designed to maximise ball speed and optimise distance without compromising supreme feel and control. Besides the traditional white colour, Supersoft is also available in a newly formulated 'Optical Yellow' for greater visibility through the air and on the ground.

The Supersoft Golf Balls are priced at a very reasonable £19.99 a dozen. Find out more about Callaway and Supersoft Golf Balls at:

The simple way to trade in your old golf gear

If you're thinking of investing in some new clubs but think your old clubs might still have plenty of life left in them then why not consider selling them online.

New online auction website allows you to part ways with your old gear and make a few pennies towards those new clubs. say that the main benefit of advertising your golf gear with them over one of the more generalised auction websites like Ebay is that you know you are targeting golfers specifically. You can list your items for bids or at a 'buy it now' price and offer buyers a money back guarantee.

Lotil Lip Care

Price : £1.18

They say: With the colder weather taking its toll, many golfers will be suffering from chapped lips. Lotil Lip Care balm to protects and cares for your lips. This rich, hydrating lip balm with an added SPF 30 will soothe and moisturise your lips. Lotil's 100 year tried and tested formula ensures relief for dry skin. Now new Lotil Lip Care means you can look after your lips, keeping them healthy and hydrated. Harsh, winter weather leads to dry, sore and chapped lips. By adding Lotil Lip Care to your golf bag, it will ensure your lips are soft and hydrated.

I say: This has to be one of the most essential items for your golf bag at this time of year. And I can honestly say the Lotil Lip Care lip balm is one of the best products I've ever tried. I've used sunprotection lip balms in the warm weather before but I've always hated the scent and slight taste you get after applying the balm.

The Lotil Lip Care is totally different as it has a delicate vanilla scent and taste that is more reminiscent of a luxury lipstick. It is also shaped to contour your lips like the tip of a lipstick too. It definitely provided much-needed nourishment for my dry, chapped winter lips and best of all that nourishment lasted for at least an hour without needing to apply, which is definitely a plus. And at a price that's no dearer than a standard lipbalm you could pick up from a supermarket the Lotil Lip Care is a must.

Groove a better short game with Titleist's new Vokey wedges

Bob Vokey is a name synonymous with master wedge craftsmanship so it will come as no surprise to you that his latest design, the new Vokey Spin Milled 5 wedge, has gone down a storm with golfers out on Tour.

These wedges have been designed with new deeper TX3 grooves to give more spin, helping you hit a wider variety of shots and allowing you to hit it close and shoot lower scores. The TX3 has a seven percent larger groove volume to help deliver maximum spin by channeling away grass and sand for improved contact between the ball and the groove edge.

Spin Milled technology also provides trajectory and distance control through precisely milled grooves and machined face texture. Every SM5 wedge is milled to the tightest tolerance in the industry, with each groove individually cut to the maximum dimensions allowed by the Rules of Golf and 100-percent inspected. A localised, high frequency heat treatment to the face provides increased groove durability for longer spin retention over the life of the wedge.

Vokey SM5 wedges are available in 21 different loft/bounce/grind combinations and six tour-inspired sole grinds, appropriately slotted into low, mid and high bounce categories to fit all swing types, shot-making styles and short game conditions. They come in a choice of three new finishes - Tour Chrome, Gold Nickel and Raw Black and are priced at £103.
