Great news for women's equality in golf...

It's unusual for golf to make the national news headlines but this week has been an exception and it's all thanks to promising changes for women's equality in golf. An announcement was made that the members of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the founding club of the R&A, will be voting on a motion to admit women as members. The club's committees are strongly in favour of the rule change and are asking members to support it. The vote is scheduled to take place in September this year.

As far as I am concerned this is a major breakthrough for women's equality in golf and I am delighted that The R&A are asking their Members to take this vote. It would be a real privilege to be invited to become a member of the R&A as it holds a unique position in golf. It was established in 1754 and has evolved through two and half centuries as a leading authority in the world game. I personally would think it an absolute honour to belong to such a historic club and I have no doubt that every other lady golfer around the world would share my sentiments. This truly will be a historic vote and one that will hopefully pave the way for all the other 'male-only' golfing institutions to re-think their policies. Clubs like Muirfield in Scotland, where as a lady golfer I'm still not allowed to step foot inside the door of the clubhouse, should seriously consider the implications of could be a landmark vote for women's equality in golf. I'll be watching with eager anticipation when the votes are cast in September.

Woburn branding for Hull

Charley Hull becomes Woburn's First Female Tournament Professional
Yesterday, on her 18th birthday, Ladies European Golf Tour tournament winner Charley Hull announced she will officially represent Woburn Golf Club as a Tournament Professional.

Hot on the heels of her first Ladies European Tour win on Sunday (16th March) Charley visited Woburn Golf Club and signed on the dotted line joining Ian Poulter as a Tournament Professional at Woburn Golf Club.
Charley claimed the Ladies European Tour title at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco by beating Gwladys Nocera of France in a play-off, following a spectacular final round of 62. She will wear the Woburn Golf Club logo on her left sleeve and enter tournaments under the Woburn Golf Club banner.
Charley joined Woburn Golf Club at the age of 11 and frequently represented the Woburn ladies teams, partnering fellow member, Lauren Taylor in the scratch league matches.  Charley and Lauren were also partners when they represented Europe in the 2010 Junior Solheim Cup. Charley enjoyed a very successful career as an amateur, which included representing England in the Home Internationals and Great Britain & Ireland in the victorious 2012 Curtis Cup.

Having turned professional at the end of 2012, Charley had a fantastic first season, which included representing Europe as the youngest ever player in the Solheim Cup, defeating Paula Creamer by 5 & 4 in the singles which helped Europe to victory.  The year culminated with her winning Rookie of the Year and also finishing 6th in the LET Order of Merit.  Following her victory in Morocco, Charley is currently leading the LET Order of Merit.

Charley Hull discusses the latest signing: "I have been playing at Woburn Golf Club since I was a young girl and it is a real honour to be signed as a Tournament Professional at Woburn Golf Club. It has been a fantastic week; I won my first tournament title, turned 18 and became Woburn Golf Club's female Tournament Professional."

The President of Woburn Golf Club, The Duke of Bedford, said: "I am delighted that Charley will be joining Ian Poulter and representing Woburn Golf Club as a Tournament Professional."

Ian Poulter responded by saying: "I am delighted to hear that Charley Hull has today joined me as a touring player representative of Woburn. Her performance at The Solheim Cup last year was awesome and to win on the Ladies European Golf Tour is a great start to the year. I am sure Charley will become a multiple winner on both tours over the next few years.  Welcome to the team Charley!"

Introduce a friend to golf for free

If ever there was a great excuse to introduce one or two of your girlfriends to golf for the first time then the month of May has it. That's because May is Get Into Golf for free month, when driving ranges and courses around the country will be holding free golf taster days.

In my experience ladies are much more likely to love golf if they learn together in a group environment with other ladies who are beginners too. These days provide a great opportunity for friends to go along together and try golf for the first time.

The initiative is being run by England Golf, along with the other Home Unions. It's not just designed to give people their first ever taste of golf but it's also designed to encourage ex-golfers who have given up the game to get back into it again.

There are loads of free golf activities being held throughout May, just one example is at the Lakeside Lodge in Cambridgeshire, detailed below.
No need for excuses now to get those friends along! I know I'll be supporting the initiative wholeheartedly.

Lakeside Lodge, Cambridgeshire, 'Meet and Greet Open Day' Tuesday, 13 th May:

•  There will be a 'FREE' Hog Roast in the Courtyard from 5.00 pm

•  Chat to us, the Lakeside Lodge Team, the Captains and Committee and our Director of Golf Dave Milburn (View/buy his new stock in the Golf Shop). Also; pick up tips and advice from Teaching Professional Andy Fletcher PGA. Andy will be giving FREE 10 minute indoor golf lessons during the evening!

•  Why not check out the Driving Range, Gym, Tenpin Bowling, Function Rooms and our en-suite Bedrooms while you are here?

A pretty patterned putter cover

As golfers far and wide are preparing for the excitement of 2014's first Major at Augusta, Georgia, IJP Design is launching 'The Azalea Jacket' limited edition putter cover. The first in the 2014 series of four limited edition putter covers, this cover has been specially designed to mark one of golf's most legendary places, Augusta.

Akin to the brand new IJP Design Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which launched in February this putter head cover, along with the rest in the series, represents Ian Poulter's iconic style with striking designs and eye-catching colours. The cover embodies the natural splendour of Augusta, which comes alive in the spring with colour from hundreds of different Azaleas. Just 500 limited edition putter heads have been produced, including blade and mallet styles.

The limited edition cover will include an IJP Design ball marker and its own protective, lined tote bag, which can be used for holding spare golf balls, tees and other accessories. Golfers wishing to pre-order a limited edition cover can do so from April 2014 at £39.95 from for delivery in time for the tournament.

Siobhan Kos, E-Commerce Manager from IJP Design, said, "The Azaleas at Augusta are iconic and this cover encapsulates the striking colours of not only the flowers but also the characteristic bold colours and style that are synonymous with Ian. Last year's series was incredibly popular and we hope to replicate the success in 2014 by giving golfers the opportunity to express their individuality with a flash of colour and striking design in their golf bags."

Soothe weary golfing feet

The luxury lotion maker Lotil has launched another new product that is, in my opinion, an essential addition to every golfer's post-round clubhouse changing bag.

It's an amazing foot cream that has a rich and hydrating formula, which incorporates Rosemary extract, a highly effective natural anti-oxidant that both softens and moisturises the skin. The addition of Aloe Vera helps soothe dry cracked, skin - perfect for soothing those aching, tired feet post round.

The Lotil foot cream costs just £5.49 and can be bought from independent pharmacies.

Stay warm in the wind with a new look for your wardrobe

Abacus Sportswear, the Swedish technical golf clothing brand, has introduced a new windwear range for ladies called 'Glade'.

The garments are all windproof and water repellent and feature abacus's patented WindVent technology, designed to keep you protected against wind and cool air, while allowing the inner environment of the garment to remain at a comfortable temperature.

The Glade Jacket is highly breathable and water repellent, resisting light rain and staining, as well as extremely lightweight, allowing the jacket to be packed into a small pocket-sized bag.

The Glade Reversible Vest (pictured, priced at £69.99) even has a reversible polka dot lining.
