GOOD LUCK GEORGIA!

One of my long-time friends and former fellow Dorset County player Georgia Hall has turned professional this week. Georgia, who is a member of my home club Parkstone, celebrated her 18 th birthday this year. She was one of England's most successful ever amateurs, winning the British Amateur Championship and two gold medals at the Youth Olympics in her final two seasons as an amateur 2012/2013 before going on to represent GB&I in the Curtis Cup this year.

If you tuned into the Ricoh Women's British Open TV coverage from Royal Birkdale a few weeks ago you will have witnessed Georgia showing that she has the skills to compete with the best female golfers in the world, at one point, out-scoring even the top professionals around the tough links course.

Georgia will now play a handful of tournaments on the Ladies European Tour Access Series, along with invites to full LET events, in a bid to secure her full Tour card for the 2015 season. Good luck Georgia!

Solheim Cup player to star in Redbourn Golf Club Ladies Day

Redbourn Golf Club is to welcome Ladies European Tour (LET) professional and former Solheim Cup player, Becky Brewerton, to a morning clinic and golf day this Friday, August 1, 2014.

From 10am, the welsh born golfer will be providing guests of the Ladies Yonex Golf Day with a display of her skills and answering questions about her illustrious career, which includes three tour victories and two Solheim Cups.

The 31-year-old will talk visitors through basic shot-making, the long game plus chipping and putting, utilising the extensive practice facilities at Redbourn – part of BGL Golf, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator – which include a 20-bay driving range, short game area and putting green.

The event will also include an opportunity to try, and be custom fitted for, the latest equipment from Yonex, the day's sponsor.

In the afternoon there is an opportunity for a limited number of golfers to take part in a 9-hole competition on the Ver Course, laid out in lush Hertfordshire countryside where for two holes, each fourball will be joined by the four-time Women's World Cup of Golf player.

Looking forward to the day, Becky said: “Yonex is committed to developing the ladies game, and I'm excited to be at Redbourn Golf Club, which, I understand, boasts a thriving and active Ladies section.”

Ian McDowell, Redbourn Golf Club General Manager, said: “It's rare to have the opportunity to get up close with professional sportsmen and women, so it is exciting to be offering the opportunity for people to come and listen to, talk to and play with a professional tournament golfer.

“We have seen an increase in lady members and visitors at Redbourn since we enhanced the ladies section within our pro shop and it is our hope to continue this trend and give more women access to the game.”

Timetable for the Ladies Yonex Day:

9.30am – Coffee and breakfast pastries available in the Café Bar & Grill

10.00am – Driving and irons clinic, plus Q&A session, in the driving range

10.45am – Short game clinic using the short game area and putting green

11.00am – Custom Fit session for visitors

12.00pm – Light lunch and Pro Shop sale

From 1.00pm – 9-hole competition with each fourball joined by Becky Brewerton for two holes of play

Entry for the day costs from as little as £10, which includes access to both clinics, the custom fitting session plus all food and drink. Leading players to contest English women's strokeplay

Leading players from 13 countries will tee up in the English women's open stroke play championship at Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey, from August 5-7.

The championship is one of the highlights of the women's calendar and is attracting an increasingly international field. Past winners include Charley Hull and Jodi Ewart who were members of Europe's winning 2013 Solheim Cup team.

This year's competitors include French international  Emilie Alonso, Welsh international Becky Harries, and Scotland's Eilidh Briggs, who will be aiming for a double, having won this season's Welsh open stroke play title. Among the other countries to be represented are Israel, Australia, Spain, Italy and Norway.

English challengers include Surrey's own Inci Mehmet, who was runner-up in the English women's amateur earlier this month and is an England girl international.

Other key contenders are likely to include Hayley Davis of Dorset, who has won both the English women's and girls' amateur titles and was leading qualifier at the recent European ladies' team championship. Alex Peters of Nottinghamshire is a past champion, having won this title in 2012 and topped the England Golf women's order of merit in 2013.

Alex tied third in the recent English women's amateur, alongside Sarah-Jane Boyd of Cornwall, who was also runner-up in the English women's mid-amateur. Sarah-Jane is a past English women's amateur and British stroke play champion. Meanwhile Meghan MacLaren of Northamptonshire has proven stroke play form, having previously won the Irish open title and scooped three wins on the US women's college circuit.

There's a strong Surrey contingent in the field, including girl international Sammy Fuller (Roehampton) and her 12-year-old sister, Annabell. Other players are county champion Lizzie Prior (Burhill) together with Shannon Flynn (Burhill), Lauren Horsford (Wimbledon Park), Iona Stephen (Wentworth), Julia Brook (Walton Heath), Gee-Won Park (Hampton Court Palace) and Sheila Quigley (Camberley Heath).

The championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play. All competitors will play 18 holes on each of Tuesday, 5 August and Wednesday, 6 August. The field will then be cut to the top 36 players and ties who will play the final 36 holes on Thursday, 7 August.

Admission is free and spectators are welcome. Draws, live scoring, news and images will be available at www.englandgolf.org/womensstrokeplay

England's Annabel picked for Junior Ryder Cup

England's Annabel Dimmock has been selected for the European team for the Junior Ryder Cup which takes place at Blairgowrie Golf Club, Scotland, from September 22-23.

The 17-year-old Curtis Cup player is one of 12 young amateur stars who will take on USA. The match takes place just before the Ryder Cup itself, which will be played at Gleneagles from September 26-28.

Annabel, from Wentworth in Surrey, is ranked in the world's top 30 amateurs and will also represent Team GB in the Summer Youth Olympic Games in China later this month. This season she has won the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke play title and the matchplay Jones Doherty Cup in the USA. She was runner-up in the Welsh open stroke play, the South Atlantic ladies' amateur and the Spanish amateur.

The team was announced by captain Stuart Wilson at the conclusion of the European Young Masters at Hamburger Golf Club in Germany. It includes Amateur Champion Bradley Neil of Scotland who will be playing at his home club. He will be joined by British ladies' champion Emily Pederson, who will take part in her second Junior Ryder Cup.

Among the other players are John Axelsen of Denmark who recently won the English boy's U16 open championship for the McGregor Trophy.
The team will be completed by: Mathilda Cappeliez (France), Alexandra Försterling (Germany), Virginia Carta (Italy), Linea Strom (Sweden), Max Schmitt (Germany), Ivan Cantero (Spain), Marcus Kinhult (Sweden) and Renato Paratore (Italy).

Stuart Wilson said: “I know that they will have an unforgettable week made up with great golf, lots of memories and new friendships. Hopefully their selection will be a stepping stone to further success in their golfing careers.”

Fredrik Lindgren, Director of The Junior Ryder Cup, added: “The Junior Ryder Cup is always a thrilling event which showcases some of the best up and coming international talent. It is a fantastic way to get involved in the whole ethos of sporting excellence and camaraderie that The Ryder Cup represents and we are looking forward to a superb event at Blairgowrie.”

The biennial event is an international showcase of golf's next generation, and is designed to continue to build international friendships between top junior golfers in the United States and Europe. Notable past players include Rory McIlroy, Matteo Manassero, Suzann Pettersen, Carlota Ciganda and Hunter Mahan.

The USA retained the trophy in 2012, winning at Olympia Fields in Chicago, and the Americans are aiming for four wins in a row this year.

TRIED & TESTED

TAYLORMADE SLDR DRIVER

PRICE: £279
INFO:
www.taylormadegolf.com

THEY SAY: When we developed SLDR, our easiest-to-adjust driver ever, we didn't expect it to change the rules of distance. Yet it did. Maximum yardage comes from combining high launch, low spin and fast ball speed. SLDR's low-and-forward CG promotes fast ball speed and low spin. To add high launch, you are now able to increase your loft. TaylorMade SLDR's CG location is low-and-forward, a monumental shift in metalwood thinking. For decades it has been accepted that a low-and-back CG is best. Moving the CG forward promotes faster ball speed and lower spin. And in order to get the most distance from SLDR, you have to change the way you think about loft. No longer is playing a driver with 12 degrees of loft something to be ashamed of. This is our longest driver ever.

I SAY: When TaylorMade first introduced a white driver I thought it looked a little strange but I soon got used to the looks. Several years on, and several new models later, I have to say that the new SLDR really is the best TaylorMade driver that I have ever hit. It instantly fires the ball like a rocket off the face and my distance gains have been in excess of 15 yards off the tee, a considerable amount at my level. I'm finding it far easier to control too - my mishits are still (just about) finding the fairway! I've never been a fan of tinkering with a club using the screwdriver to alter the set-up, so I got the TaylorMade custom-fit technician to set it up just perfectly for me, it took him a split second to change the weight configuration, very easily done. I can honestly say that this driver is extremely hard to fault. My one criticism in the past was that after a season of play the white driver head was no longer white, as for whether the paintwork on this club lasts longer remains to be seen, I'll report back at the end of the summer.

FASHION FOR THE FAIRWAYS

RISING STARS OF UK WOMEN'S GOLF JOIN CHERVÒ

The leading Italian golf and sports apparel brand Chervò is thrilled to announce that two of British women's golf's brightest young talents are now official Chervo ambassadors.

Lauren Blease and Charlotte Ellis - a pair of British golfers tipped for the top of the women's game in the coming years - will wear Chervo clothing as they compete across Europe this season.

Blease, 24, is competing this year in the LET Access Series, and has made a solid start to the season as she targets her card for the full European Tour in 2015. She has been playing golf for just seven years, after taking up the game aged 17 while too injured to play tennis, the sport she initially excelled at as a junior.

Blease, who lists her golfing hero as Suzann Petterson, said: "I'm thrilled to become an official Chervò ambassador. To me, Chervò is a cutting-edge company that produces great clothes - but clothes which are also very practical for playing."

The second golfer to become a part of the Chervò family is 28-year-old Charlotte Ellis.

During a highly successful amateur career, Ellis won the 2006 English mid-amateur and the 2011 Scottish Strokeplay, and finished as runner-up at the English Open Strokeplay in 2009 and 2010.

She, like compatriot Lauren Blease, is currently playing on the LET Access Series in 2014.

Speaking about her new association with the brand, Ellis - whose goal for the next twelve months is to get her maiden professional victory under her belt - said: "Chervò isn't your 'run of the mill' clothing brand.

"It's the absolute pinnacle of golf fashion and it makes me feel very elegant and special whenever I wear it. The tailoring of Chervo and the fabrics used are such that they fit beautifully and move with you.

"It's fun to know that you are the envy of most players on Tour, because your apparel is that good. I'm really looking forward to representing Chervo. It's a real honour."

Chervò is a pioneer in introducing new technologies and functions into golf apparel. The company's vision is the fusion of chic and technical elements, making every Chervò product exclusive in form and content.

The result is a collection that guarantees superior technical performance and an unmistakably Italian elegance in all weather conditions - on the course, in the clubhouse and beyond.

Manfred Erlacher, Chervò CEO, said: "We are delighted to have two of the brightest up-and-coming female golfers in the UK on board. We're proud that such talented golfers will be wearing our clothing across Europe this year.

"They are both ambitious to achieve great things in the game - and with the support of Chervò, we hope to see them achieving their goals in the near future."
