Odyssey Metal-X- A poplar new putter on tour
by Carly Cummins
May 25, 2012

Having spent the majority of Tuesday on the putting green behind the beautiful white castle-like clubhouse at Wentworth I couldn't help but notice how many players are using the new Odyssey Metal-X Putter (including Alvaro), and not just those paid to!

These putters have only just hit the market but they have a clever new insert that feels fantastic off the face and puts a very pure roll on the ball. The trick to the design is the combination of a lightweight aluminium face in front of a urethane back layer, the result is a crisp feedback from the metal striking surface but with the benefits of a softer feel from the urethane.

The lightweight aluminium outer layer on the Metal-X putters also has a face pattern unlike any other putter in golf, with oval depressions that create a mechanical lock with the ball's dimples at impact. This mechanical lock creates more friction, which delivers a lower launch with optimised topspin for reduced skidding and the truest roll in the game through steady ball deceleration. The urethane inner layer provides soft touch and saves weight to optimise performance. Together, the two layers combine for crisp responsiveness and sound.

Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer for Odyssey Putters, said: "The texture on the face does two things-it reduces surface contact and increases edge contact between the face and the ball. Reducing the surface contact during impact helps us create a solid, yet soft, sound at impact. That sound equates to feel, so it's a great feeling insert," Rollinson explained. "I came up with the oval design on the aluminium insert to also create a lot of edges, which increases the friction between the face and the ball and helps create a very smooth and consistent roll."
Such is the popularity of the Metal X that in the first week it was out on the European Tour 13 players instantly put it into their bags. "Every tour professional we have spoken to has told us not only how good the insert feels, but also about how the ball seems to hug the green," added Rollinson.

The is six styles of Odyssey Metal X putters, including Belly and Long handle putters, prices start from £109. For more information visit
