Tried & Tested - Step out in style this spring
by Carly Frost
April 11, 2013

Hooray, the sun is finally shining and the temperatures are on the rise. So ladies, it's time to start thinking about packing away your winter woollies and waterproofs and giving your wardrobe a spring clean. To provide a little inspiration for the 'hot looks' for the fairways this season our Ladies Editor Carly Frost has tried on a selection of the new season launches to provide some inspiration for your golfing attire...

Glenbrae

About: Glenbrae is a family run business with a spinning mill in Yorkshire dating back to 1907. This Spirol Ladies Merino V-Neck really is the ultimate in technical knitwear, beautifully-made using a clever seamless yarn that makes the sweater more durable and resistant to wear. The knitwear is soft to touch and has a little bit of elasticity to give you fantastic freedom of movement in your swing. Fully machine washable and available in several colour choices.

Carly's verdict: This jumper really is as comfortable to wear as it looks. The knit is snug, soft and warm to wear, although not too hot on a summer's day, and the fit gives the perfect mix of comfort and swing freedom. The beauty of this jumper is that it looks just as smart and elegant in the bar for an after-round drink as if you were to change into something else.

Royal & Awesome

About: Aptly named the 'Hawaii Five-Oh!' this eye-catching skort has a dazzling design which will give you stand-out factor on the fairways. It's made by this new golf clothing label which has its headquarters in Scotland and has a lovely stretch fabric that is comfortable to wear and easy to swing in. Complementing shirts, socks and belts complete the 'Awesome' outfit!

Carly's verdict: I love the fact that Royal and Awesome are really doing something different to spice up the offering for ladies. The fun and funky fashion designs of this label are really bright and will add some colour to your wardrobe. It's not a look I'd normally go for but actually it looks great on holiday in the sunshine and made me feel more youthful.
£39.99, sizes 6-16,

Callaway

About: A performance skort in a lightweight stretch fabric with belt loops and tee holder. It's moisture wicking and quick dry. The complementing sleeved embossed polo is also made from the same clever fabric and has a flattering cut that looks great and feels fantastic to swing in too. Complete your outfit with the stylish Chevron Buckle leather belt that's reversible.

Carly's verdict: I felt very sophisticated and stylish wearing this outfit from Callaway. The fit is well-thought out as there is loads of stretch to the fabric of the skort and the shirt, which both makes the apparel extremely comfortable to wear and gives you total swing freedom. I particularly love the complementing belt, which is reversible from black on white side to white on the other which means you'll be able to wear it with virtually every outfit.

Ping Collection

About: With one of the most extensive ladies clothing ranges in the UK including a bespoke website where you can browse and place orders, Ping Collection is a great choice for ladies. The Catherine Crop Trouser has a touch of stretch elastic for a really comfortable fit, the Isadora Polo is made from a clever fabric that keeps you cool and comfortable and the Carrie sweater has a zip neck for the perfect fit and a special thermal knit that helps you stay the perfect temperature on the course.

Carly's verdict: I love the fit of these crop trousers. With my short, stocky legs I often struggle to find crop trousers that don't look too long, but these fit fantastically well. I particularly like the detail on the back pocket of the trousers which adds a bit of fun to the fashion. The shirt and jumper have that little bit of stretch fit that make them really comfortable to wear and the whole outfit put together looks really classy.
Catherine Crop Trouser £61.00, Isadora Polo £44.99, Carrie Sweater £57.99, sizes: 6-20, www.pingcollection.co.uk

Nike

About: Nike's new ladies spring/summer collection is designed for lady golfers seeking every playing advantage to suit every condition. It combines function with fashion with a technological twist. The Novelty Skort pictured has a separate knit short hidden underneath, the Tartan Pant is a modern twist on a popular golf look featuring special Dri-FIT stretch fabric and the Nike Sport Polo has a flattering slim fit that looks great and is comfortable to swing in.

Carly's verdict: This is a very youthful look and one which I think junior golfers and ladies with lovely legs will love! I personally prefer something a little longer to flatter my short, stocky frame, however the detail of the design is really fantastic. I really like the special built-in under short to the skort that hides your graces and allows you to swing freely.
Sport Skort £55, Modern Rise Tartan Pant £65, Sport Pocket Polo £40, sizes XS-XL www.nikegolf.com

Tommy Hilfiger Golf

About: High street fashion comes to the fairway in the Tommy Hilfiger ladies golf collection. These are the sort of outfits that you will look just as good wearing in the clubhouse as on the fairways. They are made from fine quality fabrics that look and feel expensive.

Carly's verdict: What a lovely summery outfit. The yellow of the polo shirt really reflected the sunshine. Unusually it is made from cotton, rather than a performance fabric, like so many other brands, but I think it is nice to have that mix in your wardrobe, and I feel that I would get as much wear from this shirt off the course and on it. The skort is made from a really lightweight fabric that is very comfortable to wear and I am sure will be ideal in hot climates.

SUNICE

About: Sunice began life as a skiwear brand but quickly developed into a leading manufacturer of technical outerwear for all sports. The ladies garments have innovative designs, are made from durable materials and blend a fashion-forward style with the latest technical specialty fabrics. This pretty Susan Firework polo has stretch to fit and the Addison Zephal trousers are waterproof yet ultra-lightweight and breathable. They are soft and quiet to wear with lots of hidden features.

Carly's verdict: I'm hoping I won't have to wear my waterproof trousers all summer long but if I do at least I now have a pair that are really lightweight and won't make me sweat. The design of the sunice t-shirt is really unique with the little cross zip detail at the neckline, which I like as it's really different. The fabric is that lovely soft, stretch material that fits like a glove and gives swing freedom and comfort.
Susan Firework polo £49.99, Addison Zephal trouser £69.99, sizes: XS-XXL, www.sunice.com

ABACUS

About: Abacus may be best known for their quality range of ladies waterproofs but they also have some fantastic complimenting apparel for 2013. The Marion polo pictured is made from special Coolmax fibres that keep you dry and comfortable in hot weather. The Mauna trousers are made from stretch fabric that gives you total swing freedom.

Carly's verdict: These have to be the most comfortable golf trousers I've ever worn. The stretch fabric fits snugly yet gives you the feeling of completely freedom of movement. Yes they are bold in their design but I actually think that paired with a neutral polo shirt, as I am wearing here, they add a bit of flair to your look. The pattern detail on the polo shirt is really pretty and gives that feminine touch.
Marion polo £49.99, sizes XS-XXL Mauna trousers £79.99, sizes 8-22 www.abacussportswear.com

Galvin Green

About: The 2013 ladies range has more products and colours than any Galvin Green collection before, giving you plenty of options to mix and match outfits. Sleek styles and clear colours dominate the line, along with garments that are designed to give you total comfort and freedom of movement when you swing.

Carly's verdict: The Marissa short sleeve polo shirt I'm wearing has that lovely bit of elastic that gives it a snug, comfortable fit. It feels extremely well-made and has elegant detail in the embroidery. I really love the fit of the skort, it's soft and lightweight to wear and gives me total swing freedom. The figure-hugging design is also quite flattering. The Sienna golf cap just tops the outfit off perfectly!
