Stars boost Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation
November 5, 2010

Scottish sporting heroes joined a team of walkers from Hotel du Vin and Malmaison as they completed their '2 ways in 8 days' challenge.  Braving freezing temperatures, the team walked both the Great Glen Way and West Highland Way to raise funds for the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation (EMF) - a charity set up by Colin Montgomerie in memory of his late mother.

Ally McCoist and Walter Smith from Rangers, James Forrest and Tom Boyd from Celtic and Scotland rugby international Chris Cusiter, joined the Hotel du Vin and Malmaison team as they complete the last leg of their 166 mile challenge. The walkers spent eight days walking the 73 miles of the Great Glen Way, from Inverness to Fort William, followed by the 93 mile West Highland Way, from Fort William.  The team, which included General Managers, Regional Directors and CEO Robert Cook, completed their gruelling challenge in Milngavie.

Iain Faulkner, the artist commissioned to paint portraits of the 2010 European Ryder Cup Team, which were presented to them as a gift by Colin and his wife Gaynor, and TV sports presenter Rob Maclean also showed their support by joining the walkers.

The Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation is Hotel du Vin and Malmaison Group's official charity in Scotland and the hotel group aims to double the amount raised to date, taking the total to £200,000, with funds going towards the creation of two new Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres in Lanarkshire and Aberdeen.

Robert Cook, CEO, Hotel du Vin and Malmaison, commented: "We are thrilled to have completed our challenge of two great walks back to back.  It hasn't been easy - we've have had rain and frost with temperatures as low as minus 8!  I'm very proud of what we have achieved.   It has been a fantastic experience and we are well on our way to hitting our target of £200k."

Colin Montgomerie, commented: "I am overwhelmed by the effort that these 13 intrepid walkers  from Hotel du Vin and Malmaison have made in walking 166 miles in 8 days to raise money for the Foundation established in memory of my mother. I have followed their progress and I know that it has been really challenging at times, but they should all be very proud of their achievement. 1 in 3 of us will be affected by cancer during our lifetime and our aim is that no one should have to face this alone. The money raised by Robert Cook and his team will help achieve this. I am so grateful to them all. "

Chris Cusiter, Scotland rugby international and former British Lion, said:  "It's great to be here with Robert Cook and his colleagues, to walk the final leg of their 166 mile journey and celebrate with them as they walk over the finish line.  They have made a huge effort to really make a difference and raise funds for this very worthy cause."

In Feburary 2010, EMF reached its first anniversary and announced the appointment of Edinburgh based architect Neil Gillespie, to build the first Elizabeth Montgomerie Building.  A new Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre will be built at Monklands Hospital, Lanarkshire, to provide practical and emotional support to cancer patients, their families and carers.  Designs for the building and the surrounding landscape are at an advanced stage and building works are expected to commence in early 2011.

Earlier this month, EMF was chosen as the official charity of the Ryder Cup and a second project, a Maggie's Centre at Foresterhill Hospital in Aberdeen, will also be funded by the Foundation which has now raised almost £1m to date.

In addition to the ''2 ways in 8 days' challenge, the leading lifestyle hotel group is also hosting a series of charity events, including Farmers Markets.  Throughout October and November a discretionary £1 per stay, 50p per burger and £1 per table for lunch or dinner will be added to guests' bills to go towards the charity.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation to The Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation can visit Hotel du Vin or Malmaison and make a direct donation at the hotel reception desk.   Donations can also be made at www.elizabethmontgomerie.org .

Tiso's, the outdoor experience specialists, have sponsored '2 Ways in 8 Days' by providing all the walkers kit, including jackets and trousers.  Members of Tiso's staff joined the walkers on various parts of the walk.
