Golf art and book exhibition at Fairmont St Andrews
December 15, 2010

A unique golf book measuring more than a metre long and nearly 60kg in weight can be seen by the public for the first time when it is exhibited at Fairmont St Andrews.

Billed as the world's most luxurious tome dedicated to the game of golf, it features contributions from more than 50 industry experts including Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and many of the world's leading golf course architects.

The exceptional publication, which was designed by authors and artists Paul Skellett and Simon Weitzman, was handmade by the royal binder, boasts rare Russian hide, gold insignia work and 140 museum-grade, hand-printed pages and is part of an exclusive preview of 'Golf', the Golf Art Folio Exhibition presented by Derbyshire and London-based Wonderland Gallery.

A number of limited-edition, framed prints of pages from the publication are also part of the exhibition which will be open from December 10 to January 14.

Jane Frazer, Fairmont St Andrews' director of sales and marketing, said: "Golf enthusiasts flock to St Andrews to enjoy the fantastic courses on offer and soak up the history of the game. This exhibition will give them the chance to see some elements they wouldn't normally be able to appreciate in such depth and we're confident it will prove very popular."

In addition to the golf-themed artwork, there is also a viewing of Skellett and fellow artist Pokey Pola's new and original contemporary works, from the Wonderland Gallery collection, on display.

And the installation also includes the artists' Lewis Carroll Society-endorsed collection of Alice Underground paintings, the first contemporary collection of Alice Underground paintings produced for nearly two decades.

Prints and originals are available for purchase over the period of the exhibition.

It might seem an unusual event for a venue more widely known as one of the UK 's leading five-star golf resorts, but Fairmont St Andrews is no stranger to welcoming guests for occasions of all shapes and sizes.

As well as prestigious golf tournaments it has also been transformed into a replica of Harry Potter's Hogwarts School, hosted some of the world's most powerful people for Northern Ireland peace talks and a G20 summit, as well as being the venue for the fashion show where Kate Middleton is widely reported to have first caught Prince William's eye.
