May 4, 2010

Record numbers of golfers are entering the 2010-11 edition of Britain’s largest amateur golf tournament, the Matchplay Championship, which will see the grand final hosted at The Els Club in Dubai.

Entries for the championship, first launched in 2003, will close on June 30.

The Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel“Our team have just come back from Dubai and it is easy to see why any golfer would want the chance to compete out there when you see the stunning venue and the superb course designed by Ernie Els,” said John Woosey, Managing Director of The Golfers Club which promotes the Matchplay Championship

“The Marriott Dubai Harbour Hotel (pictured right) and the team at The Els Club couldn’t have been more helpful and enthusiastic about the Matchplay Championship. The hospitality shown by the Marriott staff and the sheer professionalism of The Els Club team is unsurpassed and you can see why Dubai is a world class destination.

“Our finalists will experience what it’s like being a ‘tour player’ for the week and all this is open to any golfer for just £20 entry fee. On top of that, you also get Sky Sports cameras following you from the UK regional finals to the Grand Final.

”It’s not every day as an amateur golfer that you’ll find yourself and your partner walking up the 18th with the Sky Sports cameras on you!” added John.

Golfers have until June 30 to enter and will then take part in regional qualifier rounds before a North and South regional final. In all 36 finalists will make it to the Dubai Grand Final, staying at the sumptuous Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel.

Each finalist will be given international return flights to Dubai, 3-days of competition at The Els Club, seven nights’ accommodation at the Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel and a lavish prize-giving gala dinner.

There are three categories which are: Men’s pairs with a CONGU active handicap and Mixed pairs with a CONGU active handicap. There is also a third category for Men’s pairs with a non-active CONGU handicap which enables golfers who are not members of a golf club to enter the event.
