Captain Monty picks Donald, Harrington and Edoardo Molinari
August 29, 2010

Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari have been picked by European Captain Colin Montgomerie as his three wildcard selections for the Ryder Cup against the US in October.

Molinari was chosen after his blistering finish at Gleneagles where he captured the Johnnie Walker Championship by one stroke, less than 90 minutes before the wildcards were due to be announced.

"In my time as a player on the European Tour I don't think I've seen a finish of that quality under that pressure ever," Montgomerie told a news conference after Molinari birdied the last three holes.

"That's the kind of player we need to regain the Ryder Cup."

Edoardo and automatic selection Francesco Molinari, who joined forces to win the 2009 World Cup for Italy, will be the first brothers to play in the same Ryder Cup team.

In selecting three-time major champion Harrington, Donald and Edoardo Molinari, Montgomerie leaves Paul Casey, ranked No. 9 in the world, and twice 2010 US PGA Tour winner Justin Rose on the sidelines, along with Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson and Alvaro Quiros.

Donald is making a strong bid Sunday to win The Barclays, which is the first event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, where the Englishman, who won the Madrid Masters, birdied his first six holes.

Montgomerie also announced that Sergio Garcia will join as fourth vice captain. Earlier this month the Spaniard had announced that he was taking a sabbatical from competitive golf.

"I feel sorry for Paul Casey and Justin Rose," added Montgomerie.

"The standard of European golf has been second to none this year. These are the 12 players we feel very happy with."

Harrington, Donald and Edoardo Molinari join automatic choices Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Francesco Molinari, Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez in Europe's team.

Montgomerie has also asked Welshman Rhys Davies to accompany the team to Celtic Manor. The previous captain, Nick Faldo, did similarly with Martin Kaymer, who qualified for the European Tour this year, for the matches in Valhalla.

Montgomerie's Europe take on Corey Pavin's U.S. holders at the Celtic Manor resort in Wales from Oct. 1-3.
