Rory McIlroy full of praise for Colin Montgomerie
September 29, 2010

Colin Montgomerie issued a rousing, introductory rally cry to his European Ryder Cup players, rookie Rory McIlroy said on Tuesday.

“I don’t really want to go into too much detail but Monty gave a great speech last night in the team room,” the 21-year-old from Northern Ireland told reporters at Celtic Manor.

“It was inspirational and really got everyone going. That started the week on the right foot.”

Asked if Montgomerie’s speech had made the hairs stand up on the back of the players’ necks, McIlroy replied: “Yeah, it did. It was great to be a part of, and not just the players were in there, the caddies were in there and the partners as well.

“Everyone got a sense of how important it is for Europe and for the European Tour to win this Ryder Cup back.”

However, McIlroy and his team mates will have to unite to neutralise the impact world number one Tiger Woods has on this week’s match.

“He’s probably the best player that’s ever lived … you put him on such a pedestal,” said McIlroy.

“But then you meet the guy and you realise he’s obviously an unbelievable guy but he’s just a normal guy. Before I met him, you feel as if he’s super human.”

McIlroy said the personal problems Woods had endured in recent months had affected the American’s golfing stature.

“He’s still a fantastic guy and I’m sure he’ll get back to winning the way he used to (but) for the meantime I suppose a little bit of that aura is probably gone,” said the Ryder Cup debutant.
