Yas Links welcomes Graeme McDowell
December 10, 2010

Yas Links Abu Dhabi, described by Golf Course Architecture magazine as the "best golf course in the Middle East," welcomed US Open Champion Graeme McDowell to the launch of The Invitational Tournament, which will take place January 17, 2011.

McDowell and World Number One Lee Westwood will be among an all-star line-up of 52 leading professional golfers joining 52 specially invited amateur players at the world's most prestigious Pro-Am, hosted by Abdullah Al Naboodah, three days before the European Tour's Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

The Northern Ireland golfer, who arrived in Abu Dhabi with his US Open Championship trophy, attended a press conference before taking to the fairways of the acclaimed Kyle Phillips designed links course on Yas Island.

McDowell said: "Kyle Phillips is obviously highly regarded as a designer and Kingsbarns is a good enough start. I am really looking forward to The Invitational next year. It's going to be a bit warmer than the links courses I am used to, but if the wind blows here then it might make me feel more at home."

Yas Links is part of a world-class leisure development on Yas Island, created by Aldar Properties, and is home to the Yas Marina Formula 1 Circuit, venue of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and the spectacular Ferrari World, the world's largest indoor theme park.

It is the first Middle East design for world-renowned golf course architect Kyle Phillips, who has created an extraordinary links along three kilometers of coastline, featuring nine seashore greens.

Tournament host, Abdullah Al Naboodah, said: " I was here over a year ago and loved the place instantly. Yas Links is completely different from the other courses in the UAE and I have been in constant touch with the club about its progress. The positive reviews speak for themselves and Kyle Phillips, who I am a big admirer of, has created something very special here."

An array of top professionals have already committed to The Invitational, including Ross Fisher, Oliver Wilson, Simon Dyson and Henrik Stenson, offering golf fans a great opportunity to get up close to some of the best player s on the European Tour.

For Chris White, General Manager of Aldar Golf, The Invitational is a sign of things to come: "For Yas Links to be hosting an event as prestigious as The Invitational within one year of opening is a testament to Aldar's vision in creating this golf course. This is a unique event with a glittering line-up of players, built around Abdulla's strong, personal relationships with the players, and it works perfectly with Yas Links, the only links style course in the region."
