MF Global win Banks & Brokers Championship
October 20, 2011

The four-man team from broker-dealer MF Global will be heading off for a golf break to Ireland after winning the grand final of the Banks and Brokers Golf Championship at Antequera Golf, near Malaga.

The City-based quartet won the financial services sector's premier golfing title - sponsored by IG Markets - by just one Stableford point from the winners of the inaugural event in 2006, Tradition, the interdealer broking arm of Compagnie Financière Tradition.

Hertfordshire-based Standon E&A were third, two points further adrift, with a team from Going for Golf magazine, fourth.

The winning captain, José Martinez, was delighted with his team's victory on a windy day that made Antequera an even tougher proposition than normal. He said: "It was a fantastic venue for the culmination of an excellent competition. We have enjoyed ourselves right from the start in this event - which has been organised so professionally - and to win the grand final was the icing on the cake for us.

"But it was a tight finish, as we won by just one point, on a day made even tougher by a difficult wind. We're hoping we will be able to return to defend the title next year - but first, we're going to enjoy our trip to Lough Erne," he smiled.

Aled Rees, from the event sponsor Tango Tours - the Argentine holiday specialist - was delighted with his company's first involvement with the championship.

He said: "Tango Tours is extremely proud to have been part of a highly successful Banks and Brokers championship in 2011. Our aim was to start promoting Argentina as an alternative destination for golf travel and I believe we achieved this. Through working closely with the championship organiser, Jim Nicholson, we have made great progress, hopefully attracting prospective customers as well as gaining valuable contacts in the golf travel industry.

"The final at Antequera was a very successful event, and congratulations to all that took part. I hope everyone enjoyed the experience as much as I did. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for his hard work this year and we are looking forward to working with him and his company in the future."

The winners' prize includes a night's B&B in a luxury two-bedroom Loughside Lodge suite at Lough Erne Resort, in Fermanagh , Northern Ireland , including use of the infinity pool and thermal suite at the Thai Spa and two rounds of golf per person on the outstanding Faldo Championship course. The runners-up received a fourball voucher for Lough Erne's Faldo course.

The Banks and Brokers Golf Championship also helps raise funds for STAR4Africa, a UK-based charity dedicated to providing opportunities and support for children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The championship is open to all companies and individuals but is aimed primarily at corporations, individuals and other bodies operating in and around the financial services sector.
