Secret weapon for unbeaten Belfry football team
November 29, 2011

The Belfry's unbeaten football team has a secret weapon on and off the field.

West Bromwich Albion strengthening and fitness coach Lee Marsh works with Premier League footballers during the week and then practices what he preaches by playing in midfield for The Belfry's football team in the Tamworth and District Sunday League.

The newly-formed team, who were previously known as Wood End WMC, also features former Livingston footballer Stuart Boyle in midfield, who is a golf professional at The Belfry.

The squad can also call on the services of former Aston Villa physio Jim Walker, who runs a physiotherapy and sports injury clinic at The Belfry's Health & Wellness club.

Player/manager Adam Roberts said the team remained unbeaten in the league so far this season having won five matches and drawn two games.

He was on target from the penalty spot in the team's latest success which was a 4-2 victory over Birchmoor United with further goals from Andy Green, Jacob Shellis and Graham Clark.

"The team is largely made up of guys who work at The Belfry either in the hotel, the golf centre or Health & Wellness plus a few family and friends," said Adam, who is a sales executive at The Belfry.

"We are really pleased with our results in our first year and we play our home games on one of the council pitches at Kingsbury which are among the best in the league.

"Lee has been great in making sure we are in tip-top shape with our exercise regimes and he sorted out our training gear.

"We're currently keeping fit by playing in a six-a-side league at Queen Elizabeth's Mercian School in Tamworth - we're currently top! - so we're as professional as we can be without being semi-professional.

"Everyone plays their part and there is a great team spirit since we're all good mates off the field as well.

"Special thanks must go to Nigel Gray for his support and continued involvement and The Belfry has been really supportive by supplying our kit complete with The Belfry logo so we look smart and, so far, everything is going really well.

"The pressure is now on to maintain our unbeaten run in the league and it would be great if we can play our part in The Belfry becoming known for a sport other than golf!"
