Family Fun: The British Father and Son Golf Championship
March 30, 2011

A unique and special family tournament designed to encourage father and son golfers throughout the British Isles to compete alongside one another in a fun - but serious - format is being launched by the team behind the European Father and Son Golf Championship. The winning scratch and handicap teams will receive free invitations to the European finals in Spain in October.

An exciting new tournament designed to encourage families to come together and play golf in a fun format has launched in Britain.

The British Father and Son Golf Championship will take place at The De Vere Belton Woods in Lincolnshire on July 31st – August 1st 2011.

The format is a 36-hole Betterball Stableford played off ¾ handicap, with Scratch and Handicap prizes.

The tournament is unique as it is open to both professional and amateur golfers with no age restrictions. Golf professionals play off scratch and there is a maximum handicap allowance of 24 for amateur competitors who must hold an official Congu handicap.

The overall winning Scratch and Handicap pairs will receive a free invitation* to the prestigious European Father and Son Golf Championship at El Rompido Golf Resort, Costa de la Luz, Spain on October 24-29th 2011.

Now in its fourth year, the European Father and Son Golf Championship attracts a strong international field of competitors and is televised on Sky Sports.

Thanks to the growing reputation of the Father and Son Golf Championship around the world, the European Championship now has reciprocal agreements with the USA, Australia and South Africa.

Last year’s European Father and Son Golf Championship Handicap winners Gary and Gary Carpenter Jr. had booked their place in the European Grand Final by winning the American Father and Son Championship.

“The playing with your son is just part of it,” commented Gary Carpenter after their victory. “I am just stunned at the camaraderie, the friendliness and friendship of the people we have met and the way we have been received and treated in Europe. We can’t wait to come back and defend our title in 2011.”

2010 Scratch winners, PGA Professionals Michael and John Pickford, collected the winner’s cup and a trip of the lifetime to the USA to represent Europe in the American Father and Son Championship in South Carolina, USA.

“This is the best event I have ever played in,” said John Pickford. “Words cannot describe how great it is to play with your Dad and to win is unbelievable. Mum also walked the course with us all week which made it really special – a real family effort.”

Entry to the British Father and Son Golf Championship costs just £149 for juniors (under 18) and £249 for adults. The price includes one night’s accommodation, dinner, bed and breakfast at the four-star De Vere Belton Woods, two rounds of golf, tournament entry and prizes.

Golf professionals, club secretaries, head bar stewards and green keepers can enter for the special discounted price of £149, while past competitors of the European Father and Son Golf Championship, current club captains and junior organisers can enter for just £199.

“The idea behind the British Father and Son Golf Championship was to create a fun event that is accessible by all and that anyone could travel to,” explains Tournament Director and PGA Professional Toby Marsden. “By opening the entry to professionals and amateurs of all ages we hope that Father and Son partnerships from every aspect of golf, from the hard-working green keeper to the avid club player, will be encouraged to take part.”

Entry numbers are restricted to 60 teams for the British Father and Son Championship so competitors are advised to book their place in the tournament early to avoid disappointment. Contact: 01702 680180 or email: info@fatherandsongolf.co.uk
