GolfMark award for Burton on Trent Golf Club
August 17, 2011

Burton on Trent Golf Club is the latest Derbyshire club to be awarded the prestigious national GolfMark accreditation.

It is in recognition of the work done by the club, which is based at Bretby on the outskirts of Burton on Trent, to encourage junior golf.

The club - which is 117 years old and has been on its present site since 1907 - has shown it has an eye on the future by launching a series of schemes aimed at helping the next generation of golfers.

It offers subsidised coaching to junior members as well as having an active schools outreach programme. The club has also been recognised by The Golf Foundation as a Golf Roots Centre, delivering Tri Golf to youngsters in local schools.

Taster sessions are also available for schools and community groups, as well as groups of adults.

Burton on Trent Golf Club has a very comprehensive programme to encourage young golfers and now offers junior membership from only £38 a year, or less than £1 a week for free tuition and, when proficient, unlimited golf.

Nigel Furniss, County Development Officer for the Derbyshire Golf Partnership, said: "Derbyshire Golf would like to congratulate Burton on Trent Golf Club on being awarded GolfMark. This demonstrates the club's commitment to encouraging junior golf and creating opportunities for people to participate and enjoy the game of golf. All the volunteers and staff involved in reaching this achievement deserve a vote of thanks, especially their Junior Organiser Norman Harvey."

Norman Harvey commented: "Over many years the club has been in the forefront of initiatives to promote junior golf and achieving Golf Mark is due recognition."

For further details of activities at the club, please contact Burton on Trent Golf Club General Manager Steve Dixon or Norman Harvey, Junior Organiser, on 01283 544551.

GolfMark is a national scheme run by the English Golf Union and English Women's Golf Association which recognises junior and beginner friendly clubs. It confirms that Burton on Trent Golf Club provides a safe and friendly environment for all its members.

The club has recently been assessed in Coaching Standards, Child Welfare and Duty of Care, plus equal opportunities for all junior players and beginners.

To reach the required standards the club had to provide evidence of:

  • A focussed plan to develop all members of the junior section
  • Providing a safe environment for all players
  • CRB checks on all key personnel
  • Staff being trained in "Equity in Coaching" and "Safeguarding and Protecting Children"
  • A fun and welcoming environment for junior golf to flourish
  • Access to coaching and competitive golf
  • A programme of using golf to teach respect, social and life skills, discipline, honesty and integrity.
  • Creating a structured pathway to adult membership for all juniors.

The award will be proudly displayed at the club and will provide parents with the reassurance that the needs and safety of children have been thoroughly considered.

GolfMark also qualifies Burton on Trent Golf Club for ClubMark, which is the Sport England mark of high quality junior clubs.

The Derbyshire Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Derbyshire the partnership is supported by the Derbyshire Ladies County Golf Association, the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Derbyshire PGA.
