Carl Watts golf day raises over £25k for charity
October 13, 2011

On a cool and sunny autumnal morning, 48 teams of two took to The Top 100 Rated Waterfall Course at Mannings Heath Golf Club all in aid of a deserving charity close to the hearts of Horsham folk. A charity golf day, hosted by Carl Watts, resident teaching professional at Mannings Heath GC on October 4th pleasingly raised a phenomenal £15550.50 and a minibus worth over £12000 was donated all for The Stupini Homework Club in Romania. A day that was marked with cornerstones of fundraising and challenge, the 96 participants all enjoyed an itinerary of golfing highlights, including 18 holes on the Waterfall, 4 Ball Better Ball, Beat the Pro on the par 3, Short Game tuition, prizes for best score, longest drive, top 5 best performing teams and more, all delivering on the promise King’s Church of Horsham sought to uphold for these underprivileged kids year in year out. Carl’s recent visit to Brasov, Romania, accompanied by those from King’s Church, set him on course to planning and putting into action this grand, momentous golf day. News of this charitable endeavour will be proudly presented by King’s Church patrons, Phil & Heather Playfoot, Andy & Hazel Robinson, along with the surprise minibus, on November 7th, so it is wished that a huge thanks to all involved is extended in the aftermath of a truly rewarding event.

Shotgun start at 12pm on the 4th, this dedicated charity day was geared to raising funds to support a little-known, yet just as deserving, charity set-up in Romania by former kids of the Stupini suburb. Having previously experienced the hardships of growing up in abject poverty and so wanting to offer a helping hand to those following behind them, born and living in this otherwise forgotten district of Brasov, the founding members of the charity continue to strive to keep the Homework Club open for the subsequent children of Stupini. The funds raised will pave the way for a more comfortable year for kids whose only hope is to complete school and better their prospects for a happier, healthier and more joyous life in adulthood. Paying for books, teachers, food and bus fares, The Stupini Homework Club’s overall aim is to give these kids more opportunities and to offer a secure place for each to create friendships, have fun and most importantly do their homework. Without this support, it makes it increasingly difficult for them to progress through school, so eventually giving up, and so too their chance to better themselves and give hope to their families.

It was Mannings Heath that provided the perfect setting for such an eventful day all in aid of this charity, culminating in a well-deserved evening meal, raffle and auction so graciously furnished with an array of kind and generously donated prizes and lots. The auction alone pulled in an extraordinary £7750 with charity day golfers fully getting into the spirit of the occasion and showing they appreciate the fortunate position they are in to be able to offer generously to all these kids who ordinarily hold little hope for a bountiful future.

Proud sponsors RSA maximised the haul with the enterprising donation of a minibus for the kids, so that they can get to and from school, thus further ensuring they do not lose faith and give up. The minibus will surely instill in these kids that they are not forgotten and that they too can feel a purpose in life. Their path to greater things is smoothly facilitated by this wonderful gesture - a gesture so unexpected, the benefit of this will indeed exceed all expectations.

Other sponsors of the day included title sponsor Bedford Insurance, PPG, Copart, Acis, Sherwoods, DWS Bodyworks & Nationwide Crash Repairs, so it is with great pleasure that these gracious organisations are recognised for their efforts. So too, we thank Mannings Heath Golf Club and Pennyhill Park Luxury Hotel & The Spa for the parts they played in making the day happen.

Carl Watts Golf was proud to play overall host on such an auspicious day, and met with success, they are set to present many more! Clearly received well and widening the scope of golf as a charitable vehicle, this charity day was a fantastic success, and to all involved, a great day to be part of!
