Cheshire school takes shot at national title
July 28, 2011

Willaston Primary School emerged victorious from the regional final of the TriGolf national skills competition.

A team from the school in Neston, Wirral, will now compete in the national final, to be held at Loughborough University in July.

Willaston came out on top in a series of skill-based golf games against schools from Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

The final results saw Willaston in top spot, ahead of Sherwood Primary School from Preston with Kirkby Stephen Primary School from Cumbria in third.

The Merseyside representatives were Woodchurch Road Primary School from Birkenhead.

Craig Thomas, county development officer for the Cheshire County Golf Partnership, said: "Congratulations to Willaston - all their team members played their part in a winning performance on the day.

"Tri-Golf is a fun and easy way for children to try their hand at some of the skills needed to play golf. Plus it is a great alternative to some of the more traditional sports played in schools.

"It is an enjoyable way of taking up the sport and a great way of introducing children to the game in a safe environment."

The festival was delivered by Andy Leigh, the North West Regional Development Officer for the Golf Foundation.

Andy Leigh said: "The day was a great finale to the Tri-Golf competition in the north west and a result of the hard work and organisation that has been put in by everyone, including the previous rounds.

"Special thanks must go to the Young Leaders on the day from All Hallows High School in Salford, who controlled the activities.

"Well done to Willaston, see you in Loughborough for the national final!

"We will now work hard to ensure that all the new young golfers have the opportunity to continue with their golf experience."

The Cheshire County Golf Partnership is a collaboration of the major stakeholders in golf, including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Cheshire the partnership is supported by the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs, the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association and the Cheshire and North Wales PGA.
