Costa Navarino an all season destination
October 26, 2011

Costa Navarino, the prime, sustainable destination in the Mediterranean, located in the Greek region of Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, is home to a variety of activities and authentic experiences for guests to enjoy in every season.

The region's excellent climate is ideal for those wanting to participate in sports and outdoor activities, play golf at the destination's two signature golf courses and explore Messinia's rich heritage, culture and traditions.

The Westin Resort at Costa Navarino will provide an ideal base for visitors to pursue the selection of outdoor options available and also many indoor facilities. The resort's heated indoor pool and the unique treatments offered by Anazoe Spa, which are based on the combination of ancient wisdom and modern science, provide an ideal environment to rejuvenate and relax. The Westin Resort is an ideal family destination, where children are entertained while being involved in specially designed activities for creative learning. Besides the exciting activities for every age, children and their parents can participate in the countryside pursuits by Navarino Outdoors, such as bike trekking, mountain-biking and hiking, that take in the untouched natural landscape of Messinia.

Navarino Sea offers a vast range of water experiences such as surfing and diving, to enjoy in the mild climate, throughout the different seasons (an example being the current temperature at sea only varying 1°C from the month of August). At the cutting edge Sports & Entertainment Center, the range of activities includes bowling, basketball and volleyball, whereas tennis and mini-tennis for kids, taught through innovative techniques, along with table tennis, speedminton, squash, badminton, and padel, are available at the fully equipped Navarino Racquet Academy. Furthermore, at the Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank, the centre dedicated to the nature of Messinia, they can learn about the uniqueness and beauty of the natural habitats of the region and familiarise themselves with environmental protection issues.

Costa Navarino recently announced the launch of its second signature golf course, The Bay Course, designed by legendary course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. Along with The Dunes Course, designed by Bernhard Langer and located just a few minutes away, golf visitors can enjoy this new golf destination. Both courses offer panoramic sea and mountain views, meandering through ancient olive trees and are ideally located close to the water.

Also introduced this season are the Philosophical Walks, for people who enjoy both walking and philosophical inquiry. These walks take their inspiration from the ancient Greek philosophers that taught even during a leisurely walk, and offer a unique experience against the idyllic backdrop of the Messinian countryside. Lead by a professor from the University of Athens, topics are taken from ancient Greek writings and look at the impact of ancient Greek philosophical thought in the world.

Costa Navarino's Messinian Authenticity programme offers guests the opportunity to experience various local traditions and customs of the region, gaining deep knowledge of its rich heritage. This includes olive harvesting, an age-old tradition that can only be learned first-hand. Visitors learn about the process, the local olive varieties, olive tree planting projects in the region and take part in the olive harvest, for which the traditional method of using your hands is still applied. In the nearby picturesque town of Pylos, guests can take part in home-cooking in the houses of local women. Together, they prepare and learn about traditional recipes that have been part of the locals' daily lives for many generations, and they all enjoy a meal. Further activities offered as part of the Messinian Authenticity Programme include workshops about the history of Byzantine iconography and the locations where it can be seen, and a crash course in mosaic making.

Wine tasting weekends at Costa Navarino will introduce visitors to the Greek wine world through seminars and masterclasses. Acclaimed sommeliers and wine experts will share their expertise through an exploration of Greece's wine varieties.

Costa Navarino provides an ideal location to discover Messinia's rich cultural heritage that spans over 4,500 years. Within close reach of the destination, the historical background unfolds through Neolithic settlements, Mycenaean palaces, Classical temples, Byzantine churches and medieval castles.
