Annual couples tournament set for record attendance
May 31, 2011

Prince Edward Island has established itself as a growing destination for golfers in recent years and organisers are predicting a record entry when it stages its third Annual International Couples Golf Festival this summer.

The event has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2009 and more than 100 couples are expected to attend this year's festival from July 10-14 - more than double the attendance in the first year.

Entries are expected not just from North America but all over the world and golfers will be able to enjoyed four nights and five days of golf and fun on some of Prince Edward Island's finest courses, during which many friendships will be formed.

Barry MacLeod, chief operating officer of Prince Edward Island (PEI), said: "It's great news that past attendees are returning every year for our couples tournament and helping to spread the word about the event, wherever they are based. We are looking forward to welcoming them to Prince Edward Island again this year."

Prince Edward Island is regarded as Canada's number one golf destination with ten of the top 100-rated courses in the country located in the region.

The island was voted Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year in Valencia by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) last November and boasts 32 courses no more than a 45-minute drive from each other.

This year's festival will be run over six of the courses with The Links at Crowbush Cove, Brudenell River, Dundarave, Green Gables, Fox Meadow, Andersons Creek, Glasgow Hills and Eagles Glen all acting as host venues for three rounds of golf.

Golfers will experience four nights' luxury accommodation as well as some of the finest dining on the island, with world-famous mussels, oysters, lobster and scallops to name a few of the fresh culinary delicacies caught off the island's waters.

Couples can enjoy an opening reception, closing banquet and complimentary seafood treats after each round as well as the chance to sample some once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

MacLeod added: "We are really serious about the golf product here on Prince Edward Island. We understand the need for superb service and excellent accommodation and, in addition, great golf courses that match up to anywhere in the world."

Golfers from all over the world regularly descend on Prince Edward Island to experience the delights it can offer on and off the course.

A six-hour flight from the UK, the island is only a couple of hours more than many popular golf destinations in Eastern Europe and Northern Africa, while the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Vijay Singh, John Daly, Freddie Couples, Mark O'Meara and Mike Weir have all played there in the last few years.
