Kendal shoppers to discover golf this weekend
September 20, 2011

Shoppers in Kendal are to be given the chance to swap their tea bags for tee pegs this week.

Special golf taster sessions will be on offer at the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal on Saturday, September 24 (10am-3pm).

Carus Green Golf Club professionals Andrew Pickering and David Turner will be giving customers the opportunity to have a go at golf and discover how they can take part in follow up lessons or even become members of the club, which is situated just a few minutes from the town centre.

As well as an attractive par 70 parkland golf course and 15 bay floodlit driving range, Carus Green now boasts an impressive new clubhouse after a £1m investment which provides the most up to date facilities for members as well as offering an ideal functions venue for both business and pleasure.

Says professional Andrew Pickering: "We will have a driving net in place so anyone interested can hit real golf balls with real golf clubs, while we will be putting on Tri Golf for the children. We want to take the golf course out to the people in the hope that they then come to the golf course."

The Westmorland Shopping Centre can be found in Stricklandgate in Kendal with more than 30 shops to choose from and is the only covered shopping area in the South Lakes.

The club, in Burneside Road, Kendal, is launching a number of new classes in October to help people into golf.

Nine-week courses, costing just £45, will be held on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and with sessions for beginners (5pm-6pm), improvers (6.30-7.30) and experienced players (7.30-8.30) there is coaching available to suit all ages and abilities.

The club also runs a regular roll-up for juniors on a Saturday morning (10am-11am), which costs just £5 for each session attended, while a Get into Golf session for ladies takes place from 11.30am-12.30pm.

The club has around 550 members with 95 juniors, but has vacancies and will be announcing a winter membership deal shortly.

Says Cumbria Golf Partnership county development officer Jane Robinson: "The clubs, along with the county union and association, have done a great job in encouraging people of all ages to take up the sport.

"This is a great example of a club being proactive in finding a way of taking the sport to people outside the usual confines of a club or driving range.

"These taster sessions give people the chance to see what golf has to offer - from a healthy, sporting exercise to the enjoyable social side of being a member of a club."
