Dartmouth a big hit with greenkeepers
July 1, 2011

Greenkeepers from across the South West have rated Dartmouth Golf & Country Club a hit after the resort hosted the summer meeting of the British and International Golf Greenkeeping Association (BIGGA) Devon and Cornwall Section.

More than 50 members and industry partners from across the region attended the training and networking event, the highlight of which was a match between Devon and Cornwall 's respective greenkeepers.

Unfortunately for the host venue, Cornwall emerged victorious for the third consecutive year, with a 5.5 to 2.5 triumph in the Ryder Cup-style contest, but the defeat was softened by the unanimously positive feedback for the resort's Championship Course.

Those who didn't play were still able to appreciate the layout as they walked the course and had a tour of the greenkeeping facilities with course manager Terry Farkins, before prizes were awarded in the new Dartmouth Suite and attendees enjoyed a barbeque on the adjacent terrace.

George Pitts, secretary of BIGGA Devon and Cornwall , said: "The day was a huge success, with the golf course was in fantastic condition and a credit to Terry Farkins and his team. We owe a huge thank you to Dartmouth Golf and Country Club for their professional and high standard of hospitality."

Farkins added: "The summer meeting is a popular event which gives greenkeepers the chance to see prestigious courses in the region. We fall into that group as we have a good reputation as a golf course and among greenkeepers.

"Ours is a unique, different course and the guys wanted to see how we manage the site. The reaction we've had is very positive and everyone enjoyed a very good day. The only downside was Cornwall retaining the trophy, but hopefully we can put that right next time."
