Derbyshire Futures Tour underway
July 28, 2011

The next generation of young golfers in Derbyshire now have their own mini Tour to play on.

Derbyshire Golf has launched its Futures Tour for 2011 - aimed at girls and boys under the age of 16.

Those taking part do not need to be a member of a golf club, although the number taking part will be limited to 48 at each event, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Futures Tour builds on the success of the Under 12 Tour which has been run for the past two years.

The Futures Tour will feature categories for Under 16 girls; Under 14 boys; Under 12; and Under 10.

Points will be scored at the Tour's events in July and August, counting towards an Order of Merit which will determine who takes part in the September final.

Each player must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the events, which will be played over eight or nine holes.

The entry fee is £4 per event with a player's best four scores counting in the Order of Merit.

The 2011 programme began at Tapton Park Golf Club, with more than 30 young players competing in what organiser Victoria Riley described as a "great success", and continued at New Mills Golf Club.

The remaining qualifying events in the 2011 Derbyshire Futures Tour are:

July 24: Shirland Golf Club (3.00pm)

July 31: Ashbourne Golf Club (3.30pm)

August 7: Alfreton Golf Club (3.30pm)

August 14: Breadsall Priory Golf Club (3.00pm)

August 21: Bakewell Golf Club (2.00pm)

August 28: Chesterfield Golf Club (1.00pm)

Nigel Furniss, county development officer for the Derbyshire Golf Partnership, said: "The Futures Tour is another of our programmes designed to give young golfers a taste of competitive action on different courses against players of similar age and ability.

"This will help them in the development of their game, while also introducing them to new courses and new friends."

Further information - including entry forms - is available on the website or email

The Derbyshire Futures Tour is one of a number of projects aimed at increasing participation in golf run under the umbrella of the Derbyshire Golf Partnership.

This is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Derbyshire the partnership is supported by the Derbyshire Ladies County Golf Association, the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Derbyshire PGA.
