Melissa Reid supporting Derbyshire Golf

Melissa Reid, winning Solheim Cup player and 3 times Ladies European Tour winner has has agreed to be an ambassador for Derbyshire Golf.

Melissa is keen to encourage and promote the development work of Derbyshire Golf, in particular she is keen to support programmes and initiatives that encourage Junior Golf and target more women and girls playing the game.

Commenting on her new role Melissa explained "I am delighted to have been asked to work with Derbyshire Golf; I believe the work they are undertaking to develop the game in Derbyshire is well overdue. I am particularly keen to see more young people take up the game of golf and enjoy the opportunities it can provide for them. I will be supporting and promoting the programmes to nurture the game at every level".

Melissa Started playing golf at the age of 11 after she could no longer play football with the boys. Her hobbies and interests include football, snowboarding, tennis, seeing friends. Melissa credits Annika Sorenstam, her parents, her coach David Ridley and Sir Clive Woodward as the individuals most influencing her career. Melissa grew up in Breadsall Village, Derby and now lives in Loughborough.

Melissa, played county Golf for Derbyshire, international golf for England and was a member of the GB&I team at the 2006 Curtis Cup; a member of the 2005 European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team; the 2007 Commonwealth Team and the 2007 Vagliano Team. Titles that she won include the 2004 and 2005 English Girls' Championship, the 2006 and 2007 Helen Holm Trophy; the 2007 St Rule Trophy and the 2007 British Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Conway GC. She was Britain's leading amateur in 2007 and also won the Smyth Salver as the leading amateur at the 2007 Ricoh Women's British Open, on the Old Course at St Andrews, where she finished tied for 16th .

Melissa turned pro in 2007, and following many top ten finishes in 2008 & 2009 won her first Ladies European Tour Event in 2010 the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. Melissa has won twice again during 2011 which has seen her finish in 2 nd place on the money list. Her highlight of the year was playing in the victorious Solheim Cup team which defeated the Americans at Killeen Castle, Ireland, in September.

Nigel Furniss, Derbyshire Golf Development Officer commented; "We are delighted that Melissa has agreed to become and ambassador for Derbyshire Golf, she clearly sees the value of our work and will help us to promote our programmes and initiatives, in particular to get more women and girls playing golf.".
