Top senior golfers heading to Fairmont St Andrews
July 26, 2011

Former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance will be looking for some home advantage when he joins a strong European Senior Tour field at Fairmont St Andrews for the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open from August 19-21.

Not only is it the Scot's native event on the tour, but it is also being played on the course he designed at the five-star resort.

The Torrance course has hosted the tournament for the last two years and is a layout which has proven popular with competitors, meaning a host of big names will be looking to beat Torrance to the trophy, not least defending champion Barry Lane .

A plethora of Ryder Cup stars will also be in attendance, including Costantino Rocca, Des Smyth, Eamonn Darcy and Antonio Garrido, along with 2009 winner Glenn Ralph, BBC analyst and former Ryder Cup captain Mark James and Britain 's most successful amateur golfer Gary Wolstenholme.

Garrett Turta, Fairmont St Andrews general manager, said: "We're very proud to be welcoming the cream of senior golf to Fairmont St Andrews for a third consecutive year.

"Once more we will have some real legends of the game taking to our fairways and I fully expect them to create another truly memorable occasion.

"We invested heavily in the course so we had a facility worthy of prestigious events like this and our team have got it in fantastic condition.

"St Andrews is the Home of Golf and the surrounding area is passionate about the game, so as one of the biggest tournaments taking place here this summer we're hopeful of attracting the crowd the big names deserve."

Fairmont St Andrews boasts two first-class 18-hole layouts in The Torrance and The Kittocks courses. Both have benefited as part of a £17m redevelopment the luxury resort has recently undergone, which also saw improvements to the lavish spa complex and five-star hotel.
