Double celebration at Fairmont St Andrews
August 17, 2011

There were double birthday celebrations at Fairmont St Andrews as the resort's management celebrated a twin milestone with organisers of the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open.

The curtain-raiser of the tournament week included the cutting of a specially made birthday cake to mark the 10th anniversary of the five-star resort as well as the third time it has hosted the prestigious European Seniors Tour event.

A traditional Scottish piper welcomed players and guests to the tournament's opening pro-am where they were invited to share the cake cut by Fairmont St Andrews' general manager Garrett Turta, Michael Petch, tournament director from the European Tour, and Ben Davis, European marketing manager of main sponsor Cleveland Golf/Srixon.

Turta said: "We've been planning celebrations for the resort's landmark birthday for some time and it seemed only right to combine it with the beginning of what is our biggest week of the year.

"Fairmont St Andrews represents the finest Scottish hospitality available and has done for a decade now. It's a massive achievement in anybody's book and we're rightfully proud. To have held as prestigious event as the Scottish Senior Open three times within that period is the icing on the proverbial cake.

"Hopefully these first three years are just the start of a long association between Fairmont St Andrews and the tournament and it will help continue our aim of bringing the cream of golfers to the resort."

Fairmont St Andrews opened in June 2001 as the St Andrews Bay resort. In addition to boasting a five-star hotel and two first-class golf courses it was also hailed as Scotland 's largest purpose-built conferencing and events venue - an honour it still holds.

In 2006 the resort changed its name to Fairmont St Andrews when it was purchased by Apollo, which has since invested £17m in renovating the entire estate.

Extensive work has been carried out on both the Torrance and Kittocks golf courses with the resort going on to host both the Scottish Senior Open and final qualifying for the Open Championship. In addition the entire hotel was refurbished and its leisure facilities extended to create a luxurious spa and fitness complex.

During its 10-year history Fairmont St Andrews has accumulated a host of accolades for hospitality, golf, spa and cuisine, including twice being named Golf Tourism Scotland 's resort hotel of the year. It has also hosted some of the world's most powerful individuals as the venue for a G20 summit and Northern Ireland peace talks, while Prince William was a regular visitor and member of the spa and gym while studying at university.
