New golf scheme launched in Durham
August 1, 2011

Would-be golfers in Durham are being offered the chance to give the sport a try - and all for free.

Clubs throughout the county are backing the campaign aimed at helping more beginners take up the game - or to entice back former players.

Golf for All is a project that offers high quality coaching for anyone inspired to give golf a go by the success of Darren Clarke at the Open Championship.

August will see 10 clubs running special coaching schemes following on the success of a similar Get into Golf project held in the spring, when more than 200 people took part in the free sessions.

And there is no need to make an immediate investment in golf equipment.

The scheme - which is aimed at the 16 plus age bracket - is being funded by the Durham Golf Partnership and offers

  • SIX coaching sessions with a qualified PGA professional. These will cover all aspects of the game from basic swing, pitching, putting and bunker play.
  • All equipment will be provided
  • Venues across Durham, which means no-one should have far to travel to take advantage of the scheme.

Jonathan Ward, the Durham partnership's County Development Officer, said: "The spring Get into Golf coaching sessions proved very popular and it is easy to see why.

"At this time of year there is a lot of interest in golf - especially after a home success in the Open - and for anyone interested in taking up golf, this is an ideal opportunity. And it won't cost them a penny!

"The lessons will provide a fun and structured introduction to the game, so no matter what age you are it is never too late to take up golf - or return to the game if you once played it but have not picked up a club in the last few years due to family or work commitments, for example.

"As well as the sporting challenge of playing the game, it is a great way of meeting new people, enjoying a healthy lifestyle out in the fresh air and a thriving social scene, especially if you go on to become a member of a golf club.

"The fact is that 96 per cent of Durham clubs have adult membership vacancies and they have been very proactive in putting on events to encourage people into the sport and to take up golf club membership.

"The Get into Golf and Golf for All schemes support that work which means it has never been easier to start enjoying golf and to consider becoming a golf club member, with many clubs offering affordable follow on opportunities to those who wish to take their interest further."

Anyone interested is asked to book their sessions direct with the club they want to attend.
