Open Days scheme in Shropshire and Herefordshire
December 19, 2011

Belmont Golf Club in Hereford is the first to take advantage of a new drive aimed at bringing more players into the sport.

Clubs in Shropshire and Herefordshire are eligible for a £240 grant to assist in running an Open Day and follow-up lessons for those who attend.

Clubs are encouraged to offer further incentives to help recruit into club membership under the scheme promoted by the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership.

More than 25 clubs have indicated they will be joining the scheme but Belmont is the first to reveal the date of its Open Day.

It will take place on December 28 when a number of activities are planned.

Members will be encouraged to bring along a friend to play in a special competition (9.30am start) or for those who are just starting out in the sport club officials and the PGA professional team under head coach Richard Hemming will be on hand to offer advice and help as well as a chance to sample the course.

It is also hoped that members will donate their old clubs for the use of new golfers without any equipment.

Those taking part in the competition will be encouraged to offer a donation to the Captain's Charity.

Says Mark Taylor, county development officer for the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership: "The idea of the scheme is to give clubs support in putting on an Open Day to encourage new non-golfers to give the sport a try, to offer a way for lapsed members to return to golf or to convert fee paying guests into full members.

"There has been a very positive response from the clubs across Shropshire and Herefordshire as they see this as the kind of scheme that will provide them with the support they need and we look forward to announcing more events in the future."

Belmont Golf Club, in Ruckhall Lane, is an attractive 18 hole course on the banks of the River Wye which was opened by Sean Connery in 1983. It offers a variety of membership packages and golf breaks while also welcoming visitors and hosting corporate golf days.
