Chance to join County Academy
September 5, 2011

A new scheme to help promising young golfers in Leicestershire and Rutland is being launched with the motto: 'Be as good as you can be.'

The County Academy programme is aimed at helping talented boys and girls with potential, some of whom may not have a handicap or even a great deal of golfing experience.

Those taking part do not even need to be members of a golf club.

The first steps towards getting involved are being held in September when two talent assessment days will be held. These are aimed at youngsters between the ages of 9 and 15.

Anyone wishing to take part needs to register in advance for the assessment centre closest to their home.

Online application forms are available on the Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership website (www.lrcgp.org.uk).

The talent assessment venues and dates are:

Saturday, September 17: Charnwood Driving Range, Derby Road, Loughborough

Sunday, September 18: Forest Hill Golf Club, Markfield Lane, Botcheson, Leicester

"Over the years, the county union and association, in conjunction with the clubs and professionals, have done a wonderful job in developing golfing talent to county level," says Jade Boggust, county development officer for the Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership.

"This scheme is aimed at those players who have not reached the standard required for the county programme, but who have the desire and skills needed to take their game further.

"It is also designed to identify talented juniors, including children that may not have had a great deal of experience or may not yet be members of a golf club."

After the assessment days have been completed all the children will be contacted through their parents.

Successful juniors will be given a personal programme to work towards and parents will be able to follow their child's progression on line.

The County Academy is one of a number of projects aimed at increasing participation in golf run under the umbrella of the Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership. This is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Leicestershire and Rutland the partnership is supported by the Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Union, the Leicestershire and Rutland Ladies and County Golf Association, and the Leicestershire and Rutland PGA.
