Golf in the Azores
August 17, 2011

For a Portuguese golfing getaway, off the beaten track, the Azores archipelago does not  disappoint. The rolling fairways of Furnas Cedars, the demanding Links and woodland combination of Batalha and the relaxed and friendly Ilha Terceira golf course together with the commanding vistas of lava landscapes are guaranteed to leave golfers breathless.

Batalha Golf Course, São Miguel... Batalha's challenging par 72 course plays host to two PGA EuroPro golf tournaments. Contoured bunkers, outstanding greens and generous fairways work in harmony with the dramatic volcanic landscape providing golfers with a Links and woodland combination that is both exciting and rewarding to play. From the back-nine holes golfers can often spot whales and dolphins out in the Atlantic . Arranged in a three-loop formation with 27 holes and multiple tee boxes, the course can be played in any combination of three nine-hole courses ensuring that every game is different.  Green fees from €80 for 18-holes.

Furnas Cedars Golf Course, São Miguel... offers tree-lined, undulating fairways that require wise club choices and a high level of precision that challenges all standards of play. Originally designed as a 9-hole course in 1939 by Mackenzie Ross, the course was extended in 1990 under the supervision of British designers and is now a full 18-hole course. Post-game, golfers can soothe any aches and pains in the famous caldeiras ( hot springs ) near Furnas Lake ; each with a different mineral composition, pro ffering exclusive therapeutic pro perties. Green fees from €80 for 18-holes.

Ilha Terceira Golf Course, Terceira... With the only potential distraction on this course being the distant sound of cows mooing, there is no need to rush from tee to tee. Instead, golfers can take time to enjoy the low, rolling hills, sun-dappled small lakes and azalea-lined fairways of this intensely beautiful course. Arguably the easiest of the three courses in the Azores , Ilha Terceira Golf Course offers an experience that is as much about golf as it is the rugged beauty of the tiny island.  Green fees from €35 for 18-holes.
