Lakeland director set for golfing marathon
June 14, 2011

As Director and co-owner of one of the UK 's best-loved kitchenware companies, Lakeland , Martin Rayner is no stranger to a challenge, but next month he will face an epic personal sporting trial in a bid to raise as much as possible for the charity, Action for Children.

Together with friend Simon Edwards, the Welsh PGA Champion and Windermere golf-pro, Martin will set out to complete a golf marathon playing courses in England , Scotland and Wales in just one day.

The duo will set out before dawn on Tuesday 21 June, Midsummer's Day, for the first course at Wrexham Golf Club, Wales . Having completed the first eighteen holes of the day, they will be driven to Haggs Castle Golf Club in Glasgow to play again before setting off on the 150 mile journey back to Cumbria for their final round at Windermere Golf Club. In the available daylight, this gives them about three hours to play each course.

"I've never played three rounds in a day, never mind in three countries. So this is going to be a big challenge for me," says Martin Rayner. "The biggest mistake is that if we succeed, my wife will be expecting me to be home from my weekend golf in three hours!"

Helen Noble, Action for Children Fundraiser, said: "Martin has been a keen supporter of Action for Children for some 20 years and he's been involved in all kinds of events and challenges in his position with the Lakes Appeal Committee.

"Agreeing to spend 16 hours playing golf, travelling to golf courses and talking about golf though; that's a new one and we're really grateful to him and Simon for coming up with such an unusual idea. I've no doubt he will be successful in raising a lot of money which will help the charity continue its work with disadvantaged children and families in Cumbria ."
