Third time lucky for Welsh striker at La Manga
August 17, 2011

It was third time lucky for former Wales and Millwall striker Steve Lovell as he won the 2011 Footballers' Golf Classic at the prestigious La Manga Club resort.

Lovell had finished as runner up in both 2009 and 2010 - being edged out first by ex-Mansfield midfielder Fraser McLachlan and then by fellow Welsh international, goalkeeper Paul Jones - but this year he overcame a strong field containing Des Walker, Paul Jewell and former winners Russell Osman and Pat Jennings, to finally get his hands on the title.

The competition was played over three rounds at La Manga Club and a good opening day saw Lovell card 34 Stableford points to sit in joint second place with former Scotland striker Andy Gray, just one point behind the early leader, ex-Liverpool forward David Johnson.

Sky Sports' Alan McInally recorded the highest score of the tournament with 39 points on the second day to move to the top of the leaderboard but Lovell's 32 kept him just one point off the lead and a final-day 36 gave him a total of 102 points to finish three points clear of McInally in second.

Ex-Southampton star Matt Le Tissier scored 37 points in his third round to jump up eight places and take third, a further five points behind McInally on 93.

Each day of the competition saw the footballers play with a different group of three golfers who were competing for a team prize, sponsored by Addison Lee, Europe 's largest minicab fleet. This year's victors were The Waterboys - Rob Day, James Bralee, and Gary Shingler - who reclaimed the title they won two years ago.

The Footballers' Golf Classic is just one of a host of prestigious events held on La Manga Club's three championship golf courses. The five-star resort has previously hosted the Spanish Open and is a regular venue for celebrity and corporate competitions.
