Rugby stars take to the fairways in La Manga
March 3, 2011

A galaxy of rugby stars will take to La Manga Club's fairways in May for the fifth Wooden Spoon Golf Classic.

Former England scrum-half Shaun Perry staged a dramatic late charge to win the 2010 title and organisers are hopeful he will return to defend his crown, from May 18-22, against a field packed with legends of the game.

Those already confirmed to compete consist of the greatest British Lion of all time, Willie John McBride, ex-Scotland captain Gavin Hastings and England's most-capped full-back, Matt Perry with a host of intern ationals from across the home nations set to join them including Shaun Perry, Mark Regan, Niall Wood and Jamie Salmon.

Tony Richards, development director of Spoon Golf, said: "We already have 20 teams booked for this exciting event and a fantastic field of rugby legends to play alongside them.

"The event is a highlight of the year for everyone involved and we're all looking forward to another trip packed with good golf, good company and good fun. We can't wait to get back to La Manga Club, it's the perfect venue for a great event."

Last year's event raised more than £30,000 towards rugby-based children's charity Wooden Spoon's goal of helping underprivileged children and young people live happier, richer lives , and organisers have high hopes of exceeding that amount this time round.

Golfing rugby fans have the chance to play alongside their heroes with a Stableford team event taking place alongside the celebrity contest, which sees teams of three play three rounds, each with a different rugby star.

Packages start from £999 and as well as golf on La Manga Club's North and South courses, include four-nights' accommodation in the five-star Hotel La Manga Club Principe Felipe, a welcome dinner and drinks reception, barbeques and a gala dinner with prize-giving.

Non-golfing partners are also welcome to attend and can enjoy all the festivities for just £599 and all packages include a donation to the Wooden Spoon charity.
