Rugby stars enjoy La Manga
June 20, 2011

Six Nations-winning England captain Nick Easter was among a host of stars from the rugby world to descend on the La Manga Club resort in recent weeks.

Taking a break before the Amlin Challenge Cup Final, the Harlequins flanker stayed at the five-star resort to enjoy some golf and relaxation, before returning home to help his side to a historic victory.

Easter, who has been visiting La Manga Club since he was eight-years-old, said: "If you want fun, sports, leisure, relaxation and a great climate, then La Manga Club is for you.

"I have been coming here since 1987 and it still provides a great holiday with a mix of things to do."

Easter's visit came shortly before the fifth staging of the Wooden Spoon La Manga Club Challenge, which saw a record 25 teams playing golf alongside rugby legends.

The likes of Willie-John McBride, Jamie Salmon, Roger Utley, Shaun Perry and defending-champion Mark Regan all turned out for the three-day competition, which raises funds for rugby-based children's charity Wooden Spoon.

Regan just missed out on retaining his crown as former England star Salmon took the spoils from him on countback, with a score of 101 points. In the team event there was triumph at last for the London Irish team who, having played in the event every year - and finished second in 2010 and third in 2009 - finally landed victory with a score of 251 points.

The event was the most successful yet with more than £30,000 raised for charity and development director of Spoon Golf Tony Richards was understandably delighted. He said: " We made plenty of new friends and were well looked after and entertained.

"Most importantly, we raised a record amount for disadvantaged children and we look forward to exceeding our efforts at La Manga Club in 2012."
